1972. In Brazil, young people were more restless, active, rebellious, and constantly seeking freedom and renewal. National pop was in transition, and Brazilian youth music was being shaken from all sides: Gil and Caetano returning from exile, Os Mutantes more unhinged than ever in the land of the baurets, Novos Baianos releasing their masterpiece * Acabou Chorare* , and Clube da Esquina emerging with a new and enchanting harmonic, aesthetic, conceptual, and poetic proposal, creating a Minas Gerais/universal sound beyond the confinement of the Rio-São Paulo axis. Interpreters like Elis Regina, Gal Costa, and Clara Nunes were at the height of their popularity and sought compositions from new MPB talents to enrich their repertoires. It seemed natural that Quarteto em Cy, returning to the scene in 1972, would also pursue this path in this new phase of their career.
The search for new paths did not mean abandoning the quartet's trademark: excellence in vocalizations, good taste in repertoire, and the same concern for the harmonies and lyrics of what they were interpreting. For their highly anticipated debut on Odeon, the repertoire ranged from veterans like Dorival Caymmi, Jorge Amado, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, and Ruy Guerra to newcomers like Fagner, Ricardo Bezerra, Mauro Duarte, Maurício Tapajós, Luiz Carlos Sá, Zé Rodrix, Francis Hime, Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, Ronaldo Bastos, Lô, and Marcio Borges.
The four voices, always precise and complementary, and the impeccable orchestrations by Luiz Eça and Edu Lobo, move between chamber music delicacy and rhythmic vigor, mirroring the diversity of Brazilian music after Bossa Nova. The version of "Tudo Que Você Podia Ser" included here arrived in stores alongside the original version by brothers Lô and Marcio Borges, the opening theme of the album Clube da Esquina , by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges.
Four voices, one breath. The 1972 Quarteto em Cy traverses the times and territories of Brazilian music—from the lyricism of Caymmi to the freshness of new generations. Crystal-clear harmonies, meticulous arrangements, and a robust repertoire, engaged with the aspirations of the period, make this recording an indispensable work, translating for a new generation the contradictions of an urban, yet also rural, modern and ancestral Brazil. Everything you should be, without fear.
This Três Selos-Rocinante edition is on 180g black vinyl and includes a reproduction of the original sleeve with lyrics and text by journalist and writer Bento Araujo, author of the Lindo Sonho Delirante book series .

The 1972 self-titled album Quarteto Em Cy – Quarteto Em Cy is considered a high-water mark in the prolific career of Brazil’s most important female vocal group. Known for their impeccable vocal harmonies and deep roots in Bossa Nova, this particular album ventures into the more expansive, post-Bossa and sophisticated sound of early 1970s Música Popular Brasileira (MPB). The record maintains the quartet's trademark harmonic clarity and elegant melodicism while incorporating a richer, more groove-oriented texture, thanks to stellar arrangements by titans like Edu Lobo and Luiz Eça (of Tamba Trio). It features their tender, soaring interpretation of Milton Nascimento's classic "Tudo Que Você Podia Ser" and a sophisticated take on Chico Buarque’s "Quando o Carnaval Chegar," blending Bahian rhythmic influence with lush, jazzy orchestrations.
This release captures the quartet—named with a pun by Vinícius de Moraes—at the peak of their creative shift, successfully bridging the acoustic intimacy of the 1960s Bossa movement with the emerging pop and jazz fusion trends of the new decade. Featuring contributions from an all-star cast of Brazilian musicians (including Nelson Ângelo and Dorival Caymmi), the album is a masterclass in vocal interplay—seamlessly layering four distinct voices into a single, cohesive, and deeply soulful instrument. Long a sought-after collector's item, Quarteto Em Cy remains a powerful testament to the enduring beauty and refined artistry of Brazilian vocal music, appealing to fans of harmony pop with a distinctly tropical elegance.
