RADIO BROADCAST: IN CONCERT: QUIET RIOT + L.A. GUNS
Quiet Riot:
Formed in Los Angeles in 1973 by legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni, Quiet Riot holds a historic place in rock history as the band that broke heavy metal into the American pop mainstream. While their early years featured Rhoads and lead vocalist Kevin DuBrow building a fierce Sunset Strip cult following, the band's classic lineup solidified in the early 1980s with DuBrow, guitarist Carlos Cavazo, bassist Rudy Sarzo, and drummer Frankie Banali. In 1983, they released Metal Health, which became the first heavy metal album to ever top the Billboard 200 chart, famously dethroning Michael Jackson's Thriller. Powered by the wild, raspy vocals of DuBrow on anthems like "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" and their smash hit cover of Slade's "Cum On Feel the Noize," the record sold over six million copies and single-handedly opened the floodgates for the 1980s hair metal boom. Despite tragic losses—including Rhoads in 1982, DuBrow in 2007, and Banali in 2020—Quiet Riot's legacy as the ultimate catalyst for pop-metal commercial dominance remains firmly etched in stone.
L.A. Guns:
Formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by guitar virtuoso Tracii Guns, L.A. Guns became one of the definitive, gritty pillars of the Sunset Strip hard rock scene, uniquely blending a sleazy glam aesthetic with a raw, punk-rock edge. The band's early history is famously intertwined with the birth of Guns N' Roses, a supergroup formed when L.A. Guns briefly merged with Axl Rose's Hollywood Rose before Tracii exited to reform his namesake band. Cementing their classic lineup with the addition of suave, commanding British vocalist Phil Lewis, alongside drummer Steve Riley, bassist Kelly Nickels, and guitarist Mick Cripps, the group signed with Vertigo Records and unleashed a formidable string of gold and platinum successes. Their self-titled 1988 debut and 1989's Cocked & Loaded became definitive hard rock staples, producing raw radio favorites like "Never Enough," "Rip and Tear," and the soaring, signature power ballad "The Ballad of Jayne." Navigating decades of industry shifts and a notorious period of competing band lineups, the core creative engine of Guns and Lewis finally reunited in 2016, continuing to release critically acclaimed new albums and tour for a fiercely loyal global fanbase.
This two-hour concert set contains one-hour segments from both bands equaling two LPs.
