Formed at the Charterhouse School in Surrey, England, in 1967, Genesis underwent one of the most drastic, fascinating transformations in rock history. They began as hyper-literate, pastoral schoolboy songwriters, evolved into the eccentric monarchs of theatrical progressive rock, and ultimately morphed into a sleek, stadium-conquering pop-rock trio.
The band’s history is uniquely defined by its seismic shifts in leadership. In the early 1970s, frontman Peter Gabriel led them with surreal costumes and sprawling, mythic epics. When Gabriel departed, drummer Phil Collins stepped up to the microphone, initially preserving their complex prog identity before gradually steering the band toward unmatched global commercial success alongside core members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.
