I have played this classic album in its entirety and I can confidently say it is a sonic masterpiece! In essence it does not matter if you have a first or second pressing because it well documented online that there is no sonically no difference and having sold a first press a few months back I can confirm that!
This first re-press is absolutely STUNNING! The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is phenomenal and indeed the previous owner reliably informed me that both records have never been played before. I have no reason to doubt him! The vinyls are visually stunning and there is no spindle wear on the labels. I know the first / early pressings are highly regarded but I did not think it would play this well! It is a FINAL UPGRADE album which is impressive when you consider 90s vinyl is not exactly known for its 'quality control'.
You will no doubt find some listings that would say this matrix info is found on a first pressing. They would be wrong as there are subtle differences between the two. There are three main differences - one, there is no X on the first pressing, here the X refers to a crossed out '1' that you can see underneath and two, the 8552291 etching is also not on the first press. Finally both of these records were pressed on heavyweight vinyl although mine actually weigh in at 175g not 180g. The first pressings are said to weigh in at 120g.
This is a superb 'complete' package by the way. The iconic gatefold cover is in fantastic condition and has retained its original shape and structure perfectly and has clearly hardly ever been handled. The inner sleeves are as near to perfect as is possible with only a tiny corner crease on each. A STUNNING album in every way!

Visual description
The vinyls are visually stunning and still have an immaculate jet-black jet-black glossy sheen. There is just one tiny mark at the end of 'Airbag' on S1 but aside from that all sides are perfectly clean. Not only have they not been played before but I suspect they have hardly ever been removed from their original sleeves because I cannot find any obvious hairlines. There is no groove wear obviously and the white labels are pristine with no marking or spindle wear.
Play grading
'Airbag' plays with stunning precision throughout. The audio is 'crystal clear' sharp and it plays as if was pressed yesterday not 25 years ago! Aside from the clarity it really is the depth of the audio that really stands out - the bass sound is unbelievably strong here. There are only a couple of minor ticks on the fade out so I will grade as Mint- but 99.9% is 'as new' without a doubt.'Paranoid Android' also has a couple of insignificant ticks right at the start and then plays with STUNNING quality from then onwards. Again the clarity is second to none and nowhere is that more obvious than during the iconic 'rain down' vocal section. It plays beautifully and the powerful guitar end sequence is equally as good. Another Mint- track.
'Subterranean Homesick Alien' ends S1 with a warmth of clarity of sound that cannot be underestimated. Even the long final fade out note has no background. This is Mint from start to finish.

'Exit Music (For A Film)' is of course so quiet and the clarity is astounding! The opening acoustic section plays with such precision - a handful of barely audible dust ticks that is all that hardly deserve a mention. There is no background static and as the volume increases the sonic quality is mind-blowing! The final emotive vocal section is equal to that and once again Mint is deserved.
'Let Down' is Mint from the first note to the last with no interference. And when I say Mint I mean Mint! It could not play with any greater precision, not one dust tick even.
The intro on the classic 'Karma Police' is 'as new' and the opening vocal is just as clear. It continues to play with a exceptional clarity, depth and resonance. There is no need to elaborate, this is quite simply the most 'complete' version you are ever likely to hear. The emotive end vocal rounds it off perfectly and needless to say it grades as Mint

'Fitter Happier' on S3 plays with stunning precision - there is no background - and then 'Electioneering' plays with real power and definition with no sign of any interference. It rocks out loud and true! Both of these tracks grade as Mint
The quiet intro on 'Climbing Up The Walls' is faultless and this clarity remains the more you progress into the track. A 'busy' track and yet nothing is lost precisely because the vinyl is so clean and 'new'. The deep mournful sound is still there and Mint is deserved. The quiet end section plays to perfection.
'No Surprises' ends the side with STUNNING AUDIO throughout! The sonic quality here is just out of this world mesmerising! From the opening note to the fade out there is not one single negative. In essence this classic plays like it has never been played before and of course it very well may not have been! Mint

The quiet build up on 'Lucky' plays so clearly with not even a dust tick and Yorke's opening vocal is of the same standard. The first chorus is 'as new' and that applies to the entire track. Lifted straight from 1998! Another Mint track.
The gentle opening section on 'The Tourist' plays beautifully and the first chorus is phenomenal! Swirling emotive powerful music it is just perfect. It continues to impress - the vocals are so clean and Greenwood's work is so strong also. This high octane section near the end is again stunning - there is no inner groove distortion - and then the quiet drums / bass / bell finale ends this iconic album with perfect clarity. Pure unadulterated Mint audio from start to finish. Wow!
In summary this very early pressing plays with incredible clarity, depth and warmth and there is no faulting the power of the audio also. You can see why this pressing is so highly regarded. As stated it may well not have been played before and that is certainly reflected in the sonic quality. The 'sound' reverberates around the room with such precision and in my opinion this is a FINAL UPGRADE archive classic. Together with a super clean gatefold and near perfect inners this belongs in any Near Mint / Mint collection without question.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeves
The cover has been so well preserved, it is practically 'as new', and I am sure many would say just that. The edges and wide spine are in superb condition with no marking or rubbing and the corners are incredibly clean also. A couple of barely visible corner creases on a couple of them but that really is being super critical. The front cover is indeed perfect and the back cover has just one very small crease top left. The inside of the gatefold is immaculate - this is as good as it gets basically, this is a stunning example of this now iconic cover.
The two original inners are in lovely condition with just one very small corner crease on each.
Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
The records have been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
