Kubelik came from a musical family and was trained in Prague, he was director of the Brno Opera in 1938 when the Nazis took over a closed it, still conducting the Czech Philharmonic at odds with the Nazis, he was recommended to 'retire' to the country, until Czechoslovakia was liberated. After the communist coup in 1948 Kubelik defected to Great Britain as he had had enough of living under tyranny, and was invited to come back to conduct but always refused. He eventually became musical director of the Chicago Symphony, after which he directed the Concertgebouw , Royal Opera at Covent Garden and finally the Bavarian Radio Sym. until his retirement
