PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Her mountainous stature matching the sheer soulful power of her massive vocal talent, Big Maybelle was one of the premier R&B chanteuses of the 1950s. Her deep, gravelly voice was as singular as her recorded output for Okeh and Savoy, which delivered down-in-the-alley gritty blues. Big Maybelle has a blistering delivery- matched by no one then or now. A must for any 1950s rhythm and blues fan, she could belt it out and tear it up and yet be sensitive. The greatest of the blues "shouters", Big Maybelle Smith shows why she was a legend on this recording. Big Maybelle was a true original, she was an inspiration for both Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin, two of the greatest female blues singers ever, and she holds her own. Big Maybelle Smith was ... 300+ pounds. Aretha Franklin writes in her autobiography of seeing Maybelle in New Orleans "...with her little-bitty boyfriend." ... Imagine you're in a small club in Chicago, 2 in the morning, snowing outside, booze, tears, smoke and lost love permeating the place ... and a huge woman singing from the depths of her soul, a place so dark and deep there ought to be a warning label on the LP. If you have never heard Big Maybelle, you are missing out on an experience of a lifetime. She teaches a life lesson with every note she sings. A truly rare and incredible recording. "Candy," "Ramblin' Blues," and the intense "Blues Early, Early" rate with her finest cuts. "Ring Dang Dilly" and "Tell Me Who" rock with the seemingly effortless swing peculiar to New York's R&B scene at the time. Maybelle also continued to perform in person into the early sixties, when the battle with drug addiction and health problems took their toll on her. From the mid sixties on she performed on an irregular basis, settling down in Cleveland. She passed away from the effects of a diabetic coma in January of 1972. The vinyl: still retains the glossy original shine; rated: VG(+) to VG++ there are some light visual hairlines as to be expected, but play grade revealed excellent bold & clean audio for the majority, heard only a little underlying surface that did not interfere with this powerful blues experience ...both SAVOY mono labels are also clean
