PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND ORIGINAL ON RAINBOW CAPITOL RECORDS
LOTHAR AND THE HAND PEOPLE
PRESENTING
\ USA -RAINBOW CAPITOL - ST 2997
RARE 1968 ORIGINAL first pressing on the highly collected RAINBOW Capitol label of the sixties...
One of the weirder psychedelic groups of the late '60s, the New York-based Lothar & the Hand People took special pride in augmenting many of their tunes with the theremin, a then-futuristic flipped-out sound effect instrument most famous for its use in horror movies (as well as the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations"). Playing eccentric satirical garage rock and experimental psychedelia, their first album is arguably their best, they are most fondly remembered for the trance-inducing "Space Hymn," an FM underground radio favorite for many years...This album, like LP's from other 60s pranksters (Zappa/Mothers Of Invention, Fugs, Godz, etc) spends as much time deconstructing the rock music of the day as constructing it, and the end result is something like seeing a cardboard tree topple over on the set of a play. And oh, how it works. If one were to coin a new genre of music based on this album, they might call it something like, "Avant-Garde Electronic Elevator Psychedelic Garage/Pop Music."
Take the song "Ha (Ho)," sounding like it came straight off the The Beatles Sgt. Pepper LP,
Or how about the song "It Comes On Anyhow," which features trippy electronic effects of the musique-concrete variety, someone constantly repeating the phrase "It Doesn't Matter," and Buddhist monks chanting "Ohm."
Without being as pointed or mean-spirited as Zappa, these are wonderful parodies of the drippy psychedelic poetics of the time, and this coming from someone who usually adores those same "drippy psychedelic poetics" of the 60s like they were his best friend. Nothing should be taken so seriously that it can't be laughed at. This is a wildly creative and versatile record, one of the most unique of the 60s.
