1968 CLASSIC San Francisco ACID~ROCK CLASSIC

              MAD RIVER

\                                                    USA - lime green Capitol - ST 2985

RARE sought (on many wish lists) 1968 psychedelic classic ...one of the greatest (and rarest on major label) San Francisco hippie-era psychedelic classics...on the lime green Capitol label ! The lime green label was produced only some 18 months, making major collectibles on the label very collectible...just like this one...

By the end of 1967 MAD RIVER had played a number of Fillmore and Avalon gigs and were signed to Capitol along with The Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Steve Miller Band. Their debut album was issued in 1968. Extremely uncommercial, and very psychedelic,  it was particularly noteworthy for Lawrence Hammond's distinctive quavering vocals and some superb interweaving acid guitar work (particularly on The War Goes On and Eastern Light. It has later transpired that during its making the recording and playback speeds were not the same - so everything came out higher and faster than they had played it! Overall Mad River's first album features the dark side of the psychedelic experience, sounding like a soundtrack to a bad trip with its bleak, enigmatic lyrics, swirling, somewhat dissonant arrangements, and relentlessly minor melodies. The longer tracks feature rise and fall build ups with crashing acid guitar exchanges -- plus the hell-bent jerking tempos of "Merciful Monks" and "Amphetamine Gazelle," as well as the chilling closing lullaby "Hush Julian, " all still pack a punch!

Merciful Monks (Lawrence Hammond) (3:39)
High All the Time (Lawrence Hammond) (4:07)
Amphetamine Gazelle (Lawrence Hammond) (2:56)
Eastern Light (Lawrence Hammond, Greg Dewey) (7:58)
Wind Chimes (Mad River) (7:15)
The War Goes On (Lawrence Hammond) (12:25)
Hush, Julian (Lawrence Hammond) (1:11)

CONDITION: The dark cover is nearly always found with some shelf wear, this copy with very solid on all seams (no seam splits), no bends, tight look and just very light ring wear starting VG++ and sharp ...the back is very clean; "excellent" ...

The vinyl, = both sides clear and glossy smooth; clean M- (one side of label has small pen mark, but nothing really, very minor .... a solid keeper...

A cool addition to anyone's music library!
