Description
Obscure 1957 45 by Birdie Castle & The Stardusters on Jet Records, featuring “Pretty, Pretty Baby” backed with “Play the Fool.”
This appears to be a very scarce regional release from the New Jersey-area Jet label and is unrelated to the later British Jet Records company. Collector references date the record to 1957. Birdie Castle was the stage name of longtime entertainer Ralph “Birdie Castle” Catalano.
The two sides have noticeably different sounds. “Pretty, Pretty Baby”, with an infectious clever chorus delivery, is the more straight-ahead late-1950s rock ’n’ roll side, with a sound reminiscent of the Bill Haley era. “Play the Fool” is also rock ’n’ roll, but has a stronger doo-wop / vocal-group feel.
The label credits Birdie Castle as vocalist on “Pretty, Pretty Baby” and Bill Santell as vocalist on “Play the Fool.” Both songs are credited to Martin O’Conlon, with Phillips Mus. Co. BMI publishing.
Very little information on this particular release appears to exist online. Another copy has surfaced in a rare-record dealer inventory, and the release has also been referenced in collector discographies, making this an extremely obscure 1950s regional 45.
Condition: Record has some light scratches and surface marks, along with one more noticeable scratch. The larger scratch did not cause any skipping during playback. Both sides play through with no skips. Some crackling can be heard in quieter areas, but it is much less noticeable once the music is playing.
The included video features “Pretty, Pretty Baby” and gives a good representation of the actual playback quality.
