From the collection of a lunatic audiophile.
This collector bought all the craziest gear & records on the market!
Play it LOUD, so the neighbors can hear too!
Greetings,
Up for auction tonight is a important early rockabilly stomper from Johnny Burnette and his brother Dorsey, the Johnny Burnette Trio did more to take music out of the status quo comfort zone and into the realm of fire breathing, instrument abusing rockin' and rolling that scared the HELL out of civic leaders across America in the 1950s.
These guys were just a bunch of good ol' boys but did they ever upset the apple cart when they made the scene. Hell, they even chased Ricky Nelson down in his car one night.
It's pressed on the Canadian CORAL label, 61675, the sides are (89909) Midnight Train & Oh Baby Babe (89922) respectively.
Condition of the labels are good as shown, these are all PLAY GRADED, the audio quality has a faint amount of surface noise, the last image in this auction shows the 1960 4 speed Emerson hat-box player the platter was tested on, the tone was set to high so as not to hide any snap, crackle or pop. a mighty loud recording it is too. I noticed that not only was this a good loud recording, it had a notable deep bottom end in tone, not a tinny sounding Rudy Vallee recording at all, a sincerely lush, FAT bottom end. Impressive.
If you google: Johnny Burnette, you'll find piles of video clips on youtube, I noticed that many of them are German in origin with German subtitles but it's still monster fun to see these guys play. some clips even feature Alan Freed doing the introductions.
I've thumbed through every good record guide I could find and cannot find a US pressing of this title on 78 anywhere, Canada pressed 78's 4 years longer than was the standard in the US, so there may not be a US pressing available. This is a fairly well researched guess. If I'm wrong someone will correct me but I just can't find a US pressing for sale or listed in a guide ANYWHERE.
Packing of 78s are tricky at best. We've worked out 2 methods that bring consistently good results with layers of corrugated cardboard to reinforce the disc, so far-so good over years of trials. Distinctly expensive discs will be packaged in steel 35 mm film cannisters of an appropriate diameter, they're heavy enough to stand on without the platter inside being damaged. That should give us enough protection to ship them just about anywhere intact. Insurance should be purchased as a precaution though.
This 10 day auction ends Monday night.
