Description
OK - I've spent a lot of time researching this LP with only limited success but I'll tell you what I know.
I believe that this record was brought to the UK by a vicar's wife after their honeymoon in the West Indies in the 1950s (the lady in question has written her name in one corner of the sleeve).
The Duke in question is, I believe Arthur 'Duke' Reid who came to prominence on the Jamaican music scene around the same time as Prince Buster (Cecil Campbell) and Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd.
The record is an original Jamaican 33rpm LP released on Kingston's Federal Records sometime between 1954 and 1958. The reason that I put its origins between these dates is that Federal Records was founded in 1954 and Duke began releasing records from his own "Trojan" label in the late 50s and founded "Duke Reid Records" in 1959 so it stands to reason that this record pre-dates that. It is almost certainly closer to a 1954 release than a 1958 and as such could be one of the earliest Duke Reid recordings and a very rare find indeed - I cannot find any reference to this record anywhere.
The sleeve declares that the artist(s) on this record is "Duke and his Jamaica Five" and the title of the record as "Kalypso and Ska", however the label on the record itself appears to name the artist as "Duke, Calypso and Ska" and the record title as "Kalypso". Despite the confusion the track listings on both the sleeve and the record do match. The record label also states "Manufactured by Federal Record MFG Co Ltd. Jamaica W.I." and there is no catalogue number.
If anyone reading this has any more information on this record I would be very interested to find out more about it - if only to update this description. Either way this would be a real treat for collectors of early Jamaican ska recordings.

I have received an email from someone far more knowledgable than myself about this record and it would appear that my research has led me somewhat astray. The following is a transcipt of the email with the person's name omitted:

While this is a indeed a rather hard to find record, I feel compelled to drop you a note to tell you that this record most likely has NOTHING to do with Duke Reid. I would be very surprized if the leader of this session was NOT a singer named "Duke Harris," a so-called Jamaican calypsonian who recorded two other records that I know about (both for Kalypso/Federal).
I would also guess that this record was likely was not released between 1954 and 1958 (a time period when Kalypso/Federal was manufacturing mostly 78RPM records). I would say this dates from 1962 at the earliest, based on the label indicating that it was "Manufactured by Federal Record MFG Co Ltd. Jamaica W.I." Jamaica became independent in 1962. Typically, records manufactured by Federal before 1962 carried the label "Jamaica B.W.I." After 1962, the "B" for British West Indies was deleted.
Again, this record IS pretty hard to find (I've only seen it a couple of times and do not have a copy of my own), but I am virtually certain it has nothing to do with Duke Reid.

I have no wish to sell this record under false pretences and this record deserves to be owned by someone who can appreciate it.
