VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT CRUISIN' THE 50s TEST PRESSING
EDDIE COCHRAN
THREE STEPS TO HEAVEN / CUT ACROSS SHORTY
Issued in 1995 on the CRUISIN' THE 50's label - catalogue no.CASB 001- This is a faithful 78 rpm record in heavyweight vinyl. Included with the record are all the inserts.
THE BIRTH OF CRUISIN' THE 50's 78 rpm RECORDS
It all started back in 1993 when Cruisin' The 50's were attending many Jukebox shows in Holland and Belgium selling original Rock'n'Roll 78's.They were asked all the time for Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps To Heaven" which is of course extremely rare on 78 - so Cruisin' set out to try and make an authentic 78 as close to an original as they could.
It took 2 years of negotiations with EMI and with the help of Nigel Reeve they finally agreed to a Limited Edition of 300.
Then came the task of finding an engineer to cut the masters and luckily for Cruisin' Abbey Road Studios suggested Sean Davis a now multi award winning engineer who had worked back in the late 50's and early 60's cutting some of the hits at Columbia and Top Rank on 78. Sean managed to track down and restore an original valve Mono 78 rpm cutting lathe - although it did blow up at the first attempt at cutting. Many test cuts were done before he was happy with the right groove depth for that authentic 78 sound - he even put a locked eccentric groove at the end of each track as this is required for early jukeboxes to reject the record. It was his attention to detail that made the records so good.
One of the conditions of getting copyright was that the record had to be manufactured at EMI and once again Cruisin' were lucky in that being a short run they could have use of an original hand press - time consuming but giving a fantastic authentic product.
The sleeve for this first 78 was designed by Cliff at Cruisin', but the subsequent 5 releases were done by Chris Marriot and these designs formed part off his colledge degree. All the sleeves were Hand Printed one colour at a time.
From getting copyright it took 9 months to get the finished 78 released in late 1995.With great reviews in Record Collector magazine and just in time for the Rock Around The Jukebox Show in Rosmalen Holland - the record was extremely well received and needless to say the 78 sold out in just 12 weeks.
This Test Pressing is one of 10 made before the 300 normal issues were pressed and as far as we are aware none have ever come up for sale and it is in EXCELLENT condition
The record is a true 78 and can be played if wanted on any Jukebox or record player with a 78 rpm needle - can also be played with a 33/45 needle.
IT IS NOT AN INFERIOR MICROGROOVE RECORDING
