Description
Various Artists, Music from the South Volume 7: Elder Songsters, 2 (Folkways FA 2656) (1956).
Field recordings made in AL, LA and MS in 1954 by Frederic Ramsey, Jr. All the performers on this LP were rural African-Americans aged between 60 and 95, and none had ever recorded before. With a 28pp booklet (spanning this and the companion volume), containing notes on the project, the performers and the songs, lyric transcriptions and several of Ramsey's fine photographs.
O, The Sun Don't Never Go Down/I Shall Not Be Moved/Travelin' Shoes/Dark Was the Night, and Cold the Ground/Am I a Soldier of the Cross?/A Charge to Keep I Have/That Ain't All, I Got More B'side/Dark Was the Night (two further versions)/When the Way Is Dark and Dreary/Well, I Been Traveling All Through This Way etc. -- 18 tracks in all.
Condition: disc has a few scuffs and small marks, probably pressing flaws rather than damage from use. Booklet slightly yellowed at edges but otherwise excellent. Jacket has tiny bumps at corners, a scrape on the front cover (on "THE" -- see illustration) and some other slight signs of wear and age, but no slits or other significant damage.
NOTE: Possibly because of their very specialised subject-matter, this LP and its companion volume are probably the hardest to find of the Music from the South series. In the seller's long experience, he cannot remember ever meeting a collector who owned them, and it is likely that most copies were acquired by libraries. This is therefore a very rare opportunity to acquire this important and excellently annotated documentary recording.
