A CHANCE TO BID ON THIS ULTRA RARE 1931 78rpm FLEXI-DISC ON THE FILMOPHONE LABEL IN GREEN CELLULOID FROM THE REGENCY DANCE ORCHESTRA

 

 

 Filmophones were released in Great Britain in the early 1930s and were made of a transparent celluloid of various colours. Some are red or green, some are blue or black. This one is Orange. The Filmophone records were made between 1929 and 1932 during the depression days.

The only problem with FIlmophone records is that over the year they have distorted and need weight on top of them to keep them flat on the turntable, and a slightly heavier tracking weight when using a modern stylus to play through. I find a heavy glass inserted over the label when the record is on the turntable helps - but to play them through you need also to temporarily tape down the edges too - maybe clip them to a bakelite 78 you are happy to sacrifice!

The surface of this disc is very quiet although there is a little noise at the start of the sides and there is the odd click - But overall it has a very very nice sound for a 78 of this age. Because of the internal stresses generated during the ageing distortion of these records they tend to tear about the centre hold, and a previous owner has sellotaped this over to prevent further tearing (frankly I find they play better WITH the tear!)
