Description
Wow, this just arrived here in a recent lot of 78's I purchased from the late Dan Coffey's collection. The famous Blues/Rockabilly collector and Teddy Boy, "Breathless" Dan Coffey, bought many, many hundreds of copies of Sun records directly from the Select-O-Hits warehouse in Memphis, TN in the 60's and shipped them back to his native Ireland. According to Mr. Ed Smith, Coffey would stay with Tom Phillips (Sam's brother) while in Memphis on his record buying trips across the country, and I must assume that this acetate came from Tom's Sun Records archive. The song "Hey Porter" was Cash's first Sun record (#221), recorded in 1954 and released in 1955, while the flip, "Wide Open Road," (#392) came out in 1964. Note that the labels list "John Cash" not "Johnny." These two songs were recorded months apart, and are the same versions as those that were released, but this is a very rare item for the Johnny Cash Completest. Recently Coffey's son Donal started selling off his late fathers records by lots and I won a lot that included this one of a kind disc.
Vinyl visually is VG+, with many small, light sleeve scratches/scuffs, plus some light visible smudges on the disc....lots of shine left in the groove. Both sides play with some surface noise and "Hey Porter" sounds like it was cut with a little more volume than the flip. Audiodisc labels are VG++. This is a 78 rpm, 10" acetate record, with new gold paper sleeve. A great piece of memorabilia! See scans. All 78's shipped sandwiched between cardboard in a 12 x 12 x 4 box with packing material. NO RESERVE.

On Nov-02-17 at 12:56:05 PDT, seller added the following information:THIS IS CORRECT RECORDING INFORMATION: This version of "Wide Open Road" was recorded in late 1954, from his Sun audition tape, with Red Kernodle playing a primitive sounding steel guitar. It was released in 1964. "Hey Porter" was recorded 3/22/1955 with guitar and bass. (There were 4 takes. Take 4 was the released version U-150.) Thanks to Mike Taylor and Hank Davis.
