Description

DESCRIPTION:

Original 1961 pressing of THE LEOPARDS on Leopard Records (catalog 45-5006), featuring the charming New York doo-wop ballad “Valerie” backed with the novelty R&B shaker “Mah Mah Chicken Pot Pie.” Produced and arranged by Joe René, a prolific NYC A&R man who shaped dozens of early-’60s R&B and vocal group sides.

Matrix / Deadwax:

Hand-etched numbers consistent with Leopard’s small-run pressings, including a visible “1961” inscription — likely added by the original owner or DJ. Deadwax also shows typical micro-etches characteristic of independent New York mastering in the early ’60s.

This copy comes straight from the private collection of a legendary Detroit crate-digger and one-time DJ, and it carries several of his classic preservation quirks: handwritten date etching, light label writing (“1961”), and the lived-in patina of records that were worked, spun, and valued. You’re getting a verifiable piece of “rock history from an epic collection of rare 45’s, filled with dj copies and promos of early northern soul, doo-woo, rockabilly, detroit garage and psyche rock.”

Condition (Visual):

Vinyl grades VG — scuffs, play marks, and surface wear on both sides, but nothing fatal. Labels show rubbing, marker writing, and ring wear. Plays with expected surface noise for an early-’60s indie pressing from a DJ’s working box.

About the Record:

Leopard Records was one of many short-lived, small-studio New York imprints feeding the city’s booming doo-wop scene. Joe René’s involvement alone gives this one a little collector gravity — completists in the vocal-group world keep these small labels afloat.
