*** RARE Radio Transcription IN CONCERT from BBC Transcription Service *** QUEEN In Concert "A Night at the Odeon" Hammersmith Odeon, December 24th 1975
The 24 December 1975 gig at the Hammersmith Odeon was the final date of Queen's UK tour in support of the album A Night At The Opera, which had been released a few weeks previously, and had already gone platinum. There were very positive reviews in the press, with Sounds Magazine saying "everything about them says that they are more important than any other band you've heard". It was broadcast live on the BBC TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test, with the audio being later broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and distributed around the world to radio stations by the BBC Transcription Service. It became one of the band's most popular bootleg recordings for decades before being officially released on CD in 2015.
This copy, one of only about 120 pressed, came directly from the BBC TS undistributed stock and has never been used in a broadcast context. This limited edition LP includes its original BBC TS cover and and slip-case; reproductions of the original TS catalogue entry and the broadcast cue sheets.
This rare and collectible LP is one of a series of hundreds of live rock and pop concerts issued by the BBC in the 70s and 80s to radio stations around the world on vinyl disks. Originally entitled POP SPECTACULAR, the series was renamed IN CONCERT soon after this disk was released.
The BBC Transcription Service pioneered full-range high fidelity recording in the BBC and was the first to regularly record in stereo and quadraphonically; it pioneered using Dolby A noise reduction. BBC Transcription Service records had short print runs, usually around 100 discs, and most copies were destroyed after broadcasting rights expired. This rare example was obtained directly from the BBC TS's own undistributed stock.
All items from Verity Vinyls are part of a personal collection of records, musical manuscripts and books, started in 1953 when the collector, then aged 12 years, bought his first LP - a symphony by Mahler. He is now disposing of a selection of items from his collection. Unless otherwise stated, all disks are tested before despatch, and are shipped in professional box mailers with additional stiffening pads, specifically designed for vinyl records.
