"She's A Rainbow" was one of the first songs The Stones produced without manager Andrew Loog Oldham. They wanted to get rid of him, so they angered him away by going against his wishes in many aspects of Their Satanic Majesties Request. The strings were arranged by John Paul Jones. It was 2 years before he joined Led Zeppelin and he was doing session work. Some argue that John, Paul, George and Ringo of The Beatles sang the "la-la-la" background vocal on this song . Others argue that the backing vocals are Mick, Kieth, Bill & Brian, and not the Beatles at all on this track. However the Beatles did help out with several Stones recordings. Nicky Hopkins played piano on this song. Hopkins, along with Ian Stewart and Billy Preston, played on Stones albums from Between The Buttons in 1967 until Black And Blue in 1976. Preston usually played on the more Gospel-sounding songs where an organ was required; Stewart played boogie-woogie on the fast songs, and Hopkins played on the ballads. "2000 Light Years From Home" has a  psychedelic sound that reflected the times. It was the summer of love (1967) and the Beatles were also experimenting with psychedelic sounds with Magical Mystery Tour and eventually Sargent Peppers. Brian Jones played the Mellotron, and various echo effects and drum sounds were added in overdubbing. The mellotron was an analog sampling instrument, in which a short tape reel was played back at various speeds depending on which key the player pressed. Most of the tapes contained samples of orchestras. They were notoriously unreliable instruments, frequently breaking and difficult to tour with.
