Description
This is an important 7-inch Berliner record, No. 25501 of a piano solo by Ippolit Pavlovich Raphoff (also known as Rapgof and other spellings) the agent for the Gramophone Company in St. Petersburg. The title appears to be "Russian Waltz in the Style of Chopin". It is actually inscribed on the disc in Russian translated into French.
Raphoff was an important player in the early history of recorded music in Russia. As agent for the Gramophone Co. he was instrumental in bringing Fred Gaisberg and William Sinkler Darby to Russia to record and promote the Gramophone. His name is all through Gaisberg's diary. Besides being a promoter of the Gramophone, he was also a music teacher, critic, film pioneer, and writer. His life after the Revolution is speculative. He was either an important player in the early Soviet film industry, or he was shot for taking part in an anarchist uprising in Rostov in 1918.
Interestingly he used the pen name of "Count Amori" (or Amouri); Amour was the trade mark of the Gramophone Co. in Russia. This was because it was thought unwise to use the "Recording Angel" in conservative Orthodox Christian Russia, so they called it a Recording Cupid or "Amour".
