Pop Spectacular No. 139
On January 22nd 1977, the BBC TV Channel BBC Two along with BBC Radio 1, simultaneously broadcast a concert by the Carlos Santana band live from the Hammersmith Odeon in West London. At the time TV sets only had mono sound, so to get a stereo effect the BBC broadcast some music programmes simultaneously on radio and TV. They advised listeners: " To obtain the best effect viewers with stereo Radio 1 should turn off TV sound and position their loudspeakers on either side of the screen but close enough to relate stereo image to picture size." The BBC Transcription Service provided the sound transmission and recorded the concert quadraphonically, and released it on SQ encoded disks to radio stations around the world.
The concert features tracks from Santana's albums "Amigo" and "Festival".
This copy of that release, one of only about 120 pressed, came directly from the BBC TS undistributed stock and has never been used in a broadcast context. This limited edition LP includes its original BBC TS cover, and is in near-mint condition.
Pop Spectacular No. 129
The condition of this disk is poor, with a fair amount of surface noise and some minor scratches. It had obviously been played a lot and was probably used as a listening copy by BBC TS staff. We would not be happy selling this disk on its own, but are giving it away with the other Santana concert as a free bonus. It is listenable and still quite enjoyable in this condition.
The concert was recorded in 1976 in New York at the Beacon Theatre and featured songs from the "Amigo" album, which had only just been released. Among them are "Black Magic Woman" and "Dance, Sister, Dance". For copyright reasons this disk was not distributed to radio stations in the USA.
These rare and collectible LPs are part of a series of hundreds of live rock and pop concerts issued by the BBC in the 70s and 80s to radio stations around the world on vinyl disks. Originally entitled POP SPECTACULAR, the series was renamed IN CONCERT a couple of years after this disk was released.
The BBC Transcription Service pioneered full-range high fidelity recording in the BBC and was the first to regularly record in stereo and quadraphonically; it pioneered using Dolby A noise reduction. BBC Transcription Service records had short print runs, usually around 100 discs, and most copies were destroyed after broadcasting rights expired. These rare example were obtained directly from the BBC TS's own undistributed stock.
All items from Verity Vinyls are part of a personal collection of records, musical manuscripts and books, started in 1953 when the collector, then aged 12 years, bought his first LP - a symphony by Mahler. He is now disposing of a selection of items from his collection. Unless otherwise stated, all disks are tested before despatch, and are shipped in professional box mailers with additional stiffening pads, specifically designed for vinyl records.
