Description
According to a website devoted solely to this timeless artist, William Thomas Murray was born May 25, 1877 in Philadelphia—the same year Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. Virtually any phonograph owner knew the name of Billy Murray for his comical and entertaining songs he cut on record. His records serve as excellent representation of the music and events of American culture—the styles, technology, events, and popular trends. He has captured the essence and personality of the times, giving a unique look into a bygone era: World War I, prohibition, the Great Depression, politics, popular trends, and so forth. His clear enunciation and distinctive style made him one of the best artists of his time. He had a unique way of making his songs come to life—delivering his material with personality and character that matched up perfectly with the subject he was singing about. Two of just such examples can be found on this offering, and as you can see, the B side that features the song Freckles is whimsically signed by Murray himself. In white pen, the autograph reads "To Lester Krohn Record-ially Billy Murray 11-19-48". This was obviously signed well after the album was pressed, as the A side features You'd Be Surprised by Irving Berlin. My research indicates this album was made in 1919. Ideal for the collector, priceless with this fabulous autograph! The record is in good condition, as well. No chips, very clean, no issues with the labels on either side.
