Description

THE  BEATLES
ULTIMATE VINYL EXPERIENCE

ATTENTION  BEATLES  FANS:

Up for auction is a RARE STEREO EDITION one of the most collectible and highly sought after Fab 4 albums of all-time:

YESTERDAY AND TODAY

(Capitol Records ST - 2553 STEREO - black / colorband label)

This is a West Coast (Los Angeles) pressing and bears RIAA #5 on the rear cover.

Tracks include:

Drive My Car   /  I'm Only Sleeping  /  Nowhere Man  /  Dr. Robert  /  Yesterday  /  Act Naturally  /  And Your Bird Can Sing  /  We Can Work It Out   /  Day Tripper  /  What Goes On  /  If I Needed Someone

This is a "3rd state" pressing. Upon the album’s original 1966 release, the replacement white "trunk photo" album slick was peeled back revealing the controversial “butcher photo” underneath.

BUTCHER COVERS DO NOT FOLLOW THE GENERAL RULE THAT A BEATLES MONO ALBUM ON CAPITOL IS MORE VALUABLE THAN ITS STEREO EQUIVALENT. THIS IS BECAUSE THE INITIAL 750,000 RUN OF THIS ALBUM WAS PRODUCED AT A RATIO OF APPROXIMATELY 5:1 IN FAVOR OF MONO OVER STEREO.

A STEREO BUTCHER IS FIVE TIMES SCARCER THAN A MONO BUTCHER.

The original original owner of this stereo edition attempted to peel the trunk cover using steam in 1966.  This attempt was largely unsuccessful and caused some damage to the "butcher photo."

In 2008, this cover was brought back to life and is now in its best possible collectible condition...

The entire butcher image can now be seen. There are some areas of touch-up- most noticeably on George's face and around the gray "Full Dimensional Stereo" banner across the top. The song titles on the upper right corner is a replacement section from the damaged peel.

Spine is solid but “wavy” due to the original steam peel. Title and matrix number, however, are fully legible.

The back cover print is solid but does show pronounced shelf-wear and some staining from the original 1966 peel attempt. One of the advertised album covers has also been "cut-out" from the bottom.

The original gold "CAPITOL '66" inner sleeve is also included along with a copy of the 1966 recall letter from Capitol records, explaining the substitute "trunk" cover.

Vinyl is in "VG" condition with some hairline scratches. Vinyl has been play-tested - no skips but some occasional surface noise.

THE REMOVAL OF A TRUNK SLICK FROM THE LOS ANGELES, CA. FACTORY (WHICH THIS #5 COVER IS) HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MORE DIFFICULT "PEEL" THAN THE SCRANTON (EAST COAST) COVERS, DUE TO THE STRONGER TYPE OF GLUE USED ON THE WEST COAST.

Renowned Beatles collector and author PERRY COX estimates that a near-mint example of a STEREO West Coast butcher is approximately $1,500.

The album, offered here "AS -IS"  in its rehabilitated condition at an incredible low price, will now only increase in value over the years. It is suitable for framing and will make a notable addition to any vinyl or rock memorabilia collection!
