Description
This is a rare promo single by The Marketts: "There's Only Enough for the West (Westward Ho)" b/w "Groovin' Time" (World Pacific 77899). Released in 1968.
This is an extremely rare single, because "There's Only Enough for the West (Westward Ho)" is not the title featured on more common issues. All other promos and stock copies with the catalog number 77899 list the A side as "California Summer (People Moving West)" with the B-side as "Groovin' Time."
This is the only copy I know of, and there is no information about why the title was changed (the original title is a bit long) and how many copies with the original title were pressed. But there's no doubt that "There's Only Enough for the West" and "California Summer" are the same tune. Both are written by Sid Ramon (aka Sid Ramin), arranged by Al Capps, and produced by Mike Gordon, and both clock in at 2:18.
The Marketts was a studio group created by Michael Z. Gordon back in the early 1960s. The group had a minor hit with "Surfer Stomp" (Union 501) under the name The Mar-Kets, followed by the single on the Arvee label, "Beach Bum." Then came a couple of singles on the Liberty label, this time as The Marketts. In 1963, they had wide national airplay with their single "Out of Limits" (Warner Brothers 5391) with Phil Spector protégé Jack Nitzsche doing the arrangement. The single was originally released as "Outer Limits," but the title was changed after a lawsuit by Rod Serling who claimed the song's opening guitar riff was lifted from the theme to his popular TV anthology The Twilight Zone.
By the late sixties, The Marketts moved away from guitar-oriented surf rock toward more complex pop arrangements, with the release of the 1967 LP Sun Power (World Pacific 1870). The non-LP single up for auction here is in a similar musical vein.
Record is in VG+ condition. Clean labels. Some very light paper scuffs, with a very small mark on the B side.
