This IS the 1973 pre-release first pressing of a great underrated Beach Boys album filled with melting California harmonies within catchy tracks ... a surprising solid album that went right by many back in 1973...
Holland was released in January 1973. It was famously (and expensively) recorded in Baambrugge, Netherlands over the summer of 1972 using a reconstructed studio sent from home, and with two Brian Wilson tracks rush-recorded in Los Angeles and added to the album at the last minute. "Holland" was a politically aware album that emerged from the Beach Boys' collaboration with two fine South African musician/leaders from the great sixties psych band, THE FLAMES. So the album is not just for traditional Beach Boys fans. This album is a work of art and pretty much as "out there" as The Beach Boys ever got without Brian. All the songs are great of course though, highlighted by "The Trader" and Dennis's "Steamboat" the most. Brian's "Funky Pretty" is just plain cool especially with the Flames singer Blondie Chaplin vocal and even Mike Love and Al jardine's contributions ("California Saga") rank among the best work they ever did. Not to mention the best album opener you possibly could have had with "Sail on Sailor". The instrumentation is perfect with plenty of great slide guitar work, a great organ solo (Leaving this town") and the most psychedelic background vocals they ever did maybe with the exception of "Smile". It all works as a whole and related to Dennis's "Pacific Ocean Blue" album that would be released 4 years later. Upon the band's return from the Netherlands in the fall, Holland was rejected by Reprise Records for not having a potential hit single. It was decided to add an old unfinished Brian Wilson song, "Sail On, Sailor", which he had co-written with Ray Kennedy. After some re-working, Brian delivered what would become Holland's most famous track. "Sail On, Sailor" was one of two songs recorded at home (the other was Ricky Fataar's and Chaplin's soulful and moog-tinged "Leaving This Town") and added at the last minute to a re-sequenced and re-submitted Holland. Mount Vernon E.P. included:::: A drug drenched epic – albeit clearly personal – fairy tale pieced together by Brian Wilson and narrated by Jack Rieley, the tracks sketch out the story of a prince and a magic transistor radio which is inhabited by the party-hearty spirit of the Pied Piper. Squelchy synths and sound effects make up most of the eerie, minimal backing music, though a few snatches of bare-bones, Wilson-sung songs pop up here and there. Doesn't really fit in with the LP Holland which was clearly definitely a self-consciously serious and “mature” LP – so this E.P. must have been mortifying to the rest of the group. Really, it’s hard not to get the sense that this was released merely as some sort of political concession to Brian. However, that being said, perhaps the only way to really appreciate this piece from Brian is to understand where he was at the time. As a fan - in the ancient days before the internet and all that - we only had communication from these stars on albums. At the time Brian was in hibernation and absent from the full "Holland" album. So at the time, when Brian was in his "wasted / drug induced period, it was thrilling to have a "message" from Brian. So this odd little record in the album sleeve was an AMAZING communication from Brian. It told us he was still out there and the glimpse of genius and harmonies told us he was still alive and trying to get well.
