Here we have a lovely RARE Berliner single-sided 7” record.

It features Mr. Robert Black (described on the label as a “Scotch baritone”) accompanied by Robert Buchanan, piano.

It was recorded at the Cockburn Hotel, 141 Bath Street, Glasgow, on Monday, 11th September 1899.

“Robert” has been wrongly hand-written on the label as “Robet”

The Mx is 3661, the catalogue number is 2569 and the selection is entitled “Mona” (which is the name of a FINE number by rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Bo Diddley, but here it’s a drawing-room ballad by “Stephen Adams”).

Adams was the pseudonym of Michael Maybrick, a multi-talented musician, composer and singer.

He wrote “The Holy City” which you might remember from miserable mornings in secondary school.

Interestingly, his brother, James Maybrick, was later suspected of being Jack the Ripper, and may or may not have been murdered by his wife Florence.

It’s a fascinating story, but remember, EVERYBODY seems to have been suspected of being Jack The Ripper at one time or another (Why not look it up on the internet? We’ll see you after a few days).

The disc is surprisingly clean for a 125 year old artefact and plays very well. The “dimpled” surface is characteristic of discs of this age, and there are some sleeve/rub marks here and there (no raised rim.. so that’s why). There are a very few very very light scratchlets which do not give grief to the ear’ole, although there's a bit of "blasting".

There’s a video among the pictures.. no photo unfortunately. We found many Robert Blacks, a jazz bass player, a jazz saxophonist, the Mayor of Fife, and a serial killer, but nobody described as a “Scotch” baritone.

Using the VJM grading system, it’s probably approximately round about near enough a V+ or better.

The video sound is unfiltered and straight out of the back of the record player. No noise reduction has been used.

Buy now, while socks last.
