We do not own a turntable that plays 78rpm records, so, we have not soundgraded these records. This set came from an estate of an avid jazz collector in Arizona. The overall condition of the 78s is very nice, see below for the individual grading.

This is a vey rare 6 record 78rpm book set from Brunswick Record Corporation. The title presents Blackbirds. The musicians/vocalists include Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Adelaide Hall, Cecil Mack Choir, Mills Brothers, Bill Robinson, Don Redman and Ethel Waters.

The previous owner did a lot of research and also consulted with different collectors on this set. One authority was Geoff Wheeler in his book Jazz By Mail, said "may be the first jazz book album issued".

Blackbirds of 1928 excerpt "What may be the first jazz-record book album issued is the exceedingly rare six-record, black and gold label 1933 Brunswick collection on 10-inch 78s of Lew Leslie's Blackbirds of 1928. Neither the album nor the record labels have an album number and the spine of the album book is blank. It does, however, have an art cover, and the inside covers have liner notes that detail the recordings. Also on the inside of the front cover are facsimilie signatures of the major artists who are recorded participants.

Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Adelaide Hall starred in the original Broadway production. Recording personnel comes from three souces; original members of the "Blackbirds of 1928" cast; performers who appeared in the sequel "Blackbirds of 1930" and recording artists under contract to Brunswick. The album features Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, Ethel Waters and the Cecil Mack Choir, The Mills Brothers, Bill Robinson and Don Redman, Don Redman with Harry and Donald Mills, and various singers with Duke Ellington: Adelaide Hall, The Mills Brothers and Ethel Waters.

Although the records are not rare, the unit as a whole is harder to find as the records if purchased all at once would receive the cover for free.  This set was purchased back in the early 1930's and is a cool addition to your 78 collection.

CONDITION Book: We are grading the book as VG. It is whole but the spine is taped and there is edge wear. The artwork and lettering are still in nice condition, with very little fading/wear. There are no scratches that we saw. The individual records are at least E- Still very shiny, near new looking, with very slight visible signs of wear, and may have a few inaudible scuffs. There is some light spindle wear on each record. There are a few minor scuffs, there are NO CHIPS, OR GOUGES. There is some minor needle Wear. The Labels are clean and unfaded. There are some fingerprints. We have not attempted to clean any surfaces. We have tried to be as accurate as possible on the grading. As always, grading is subjective according to the user and the equipment being used for play. However, these are truly in wonderful condition, considering the age of this set and its rarity, this is a fabulous COLLECTOR PIECE!

This is a great collectible piece of music in this format. We could find only limited amounts of information on this set and most of that has been relayed to you in the listing above. There are English Brunswicks issued for this album. Additionally, The album was reissued on LP on Sutton SU-270 and also in a gatefold album on Columbia OL 6770 in the Hall of Fame Series. • N (78) M (LP). As new and unplayed (there are virtually no 78s that can categorically be claimed to be unplayed).
• N- (78) M- (LP). Nearly Mint, but has been played. No visible signs of wear or damage.
• E+ (78) VG+ (LP). Plays like new, with very, very few signs of handling, such as tiny scuffs from being slipped in and out of jackets.
• E (78) VG (LP). Still very shiny, near new looking, with no visible signs of wear, but a few inaudible scuffs and scratches.
• E- (78) VG- (LP). Still shiny but without the lustre of a new record, few light scratches. LP: Some wear, scratches and scuffs, but no skipped or repeat grooves.
• V+ (78) G+ LP. V+ is an average condition 78 in which scuffs and general use has dulled the finish somewhat. Wear is moderate but playing is generally free from distortion. Surface noise not overly pronounced. LP: Below average with scuffs and scratches on fewer than half the tracks. No skips or repeat grooves.
• V (78) G (LP). Moderate, even wear throughout, but still very playable. Surface noise and scratches audible but not intrusive.
• V- (78) G- (LP). Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy greying in loud passages. Music remains loud in most passages. Surface noise and scratches well below music level. LP: Lowest Grade. Audible scratches, etc. on more than half the tracks. Listening uncomfortable.
• G+ (78). Grey throughout but still serviceable. Music begins to sound muffled. Heavy scratches.
• G (78). Quite seriously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise.
• G- (78). Music still prominent, but wear and scatch damage extensive.
• F (78). Most of music remains audible over surface noise, but listening now uncomfortable.
• P (78). Unplayable.
