“Iberia is one of a few records that I would venture to call perfect. I know what you are thinking. The "P" word conjures up all sorts of responses in readers, the first of which is the reviewer is prone to hyperbole. Not so in this case, be assured. This RCA is a "perfect" synthesis of interpretation, playing and sound.

The recording is rich in timbre and detail, and is beautifully transparent, identifying the accurate placement of instruments and the boundaries of Orchestra Hall's stage. Unlike LSC-2423 (see below), the soundfield is complete (depth and width) with the center boasting the CSO's fabulous woodwind section.

As it seems to be on many great orchestral recordings, the percussion section steals the "audiophile" show. The percussionists' playing in Iberia will amaze you with their crack ensemble and the way they accomplish quick changes in dynamics, these ranging from quiet delicacy to raw power. Reiner must have reveled in the sound of the castanets clicking merrily on his left and the different styles of tambourine technique employed by the section player on his right. I know I did. From the softest stroke of a soft mallet on suspended cymbal to the superb timpani sound, LSC-2222 is all that recorded percussion should be.

Reiner's magnificent interpretations are vivid and exciting, offering a bent knee to the two great French composers. The "slow movement" of Iberia, Les Parfums de la Nuit, is played very delicately with sheen on the upper strings that caresses and glows. Fragrant it is. Interestingly, an odd, yet quite wonderful, feeling happens during the transition(s) to the final section, Le Matin d'un Jour de Fête. In its tutti rest, the orchestra seems very anxious to unleash the tension after Reiner's absolute control over Parfums. Can "silent" energy or presence be recorded by microphones and heard through speakers?

The Ravel selections are equally well played. Adolf Herseth's trumpet once again steals the show with spectacular feats of control during Valses Nobles et Sentimentales and incredibly fast triple tonguing in Alborada del Gracioso. Horns keep up with him, too.

LSC-2222 is one of the few records that transcends engineering, and simply allows Debussy, Ravel, Reiner and his orchestra to make our souls a richer place” (Anthony Kershaw, Audiophilia.com)

***

"RCA Living Stereo" recordings - mostly classical, but also a handful of pop and easy listening titles - were made under the supervision of the most knowledgeable technicians and engineers on earth. The sound is simply amazing. On  mint or near mint copies , quiet passages are so quiet - and the surface noise so conspicuously absent - that you will not even realize that your stylus has hit the surface of the record until the music starts. The highs are high, and the lows are very low. You are going to need a subwoofer and a hypersensitive tweeter to express some of these tonal ranges appropriately. This is the music for the ears, heart, soul, mind and guts alike.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has some writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.(nothing significant)

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
