This was the very first recording I remember asking my parents to purchase. It had a profound impact on me, even at the age of ten, and along with Bobby Colomby of Blood, Sweat & Tears, was a major influence in fueling a lifelong passion for playing drums (Sounds of Hatari) and establishing an early appreciation of the jazz idiom (Crocodile Go Home, Night Side, Big Bad Bwana). 50 years later I find myself playing drums in a jazz band and inspired anew by these superb arrangements. What a wonderful and lasting piece of fine musical craftsmanship. Thanks Mr. Mancini.
The Sounds of Hatari tracklist needs to be pumped by reviewers...as it is really sensational. All real african drums mixed with percussion and brass. A knockout track. We all know Baby elephant walk too well, but other tracks on the album compete well with it. I highly recommend Breakfast at Tiffanies and Mr. Lucky goes latin, and if you don't have Peter Gunn and more music from Peter Gunn, you are seriously missing out. Mancini used the best west coast jazz players, and their sound and dynamics are one of a kind on Hank's recordings. Marty Paitch also sued a lot of Mancini's guys, and some of his stuff is in the same league...Smart, tight, exciting, gorgeous...and all these albums make your hi-fi sound fabulous. John Williams was Hank's pianist back then...and I wish John would make another jazz album...as his piano chops are seriously bad!! One of a kind stuff.
Henry Mancini was known for light jazz from TV (Peter Gunn, Mr. Lucky) and smooth background sounds for films like "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and "Days of Wine and Roses," so "Hatari" must have been way out of his comfort zone, but he nailed it (especially in the 6-minute suspense piece for the rhino hunt called "The Sounds of Hatari"). (The hunting is for zoos, not senseless slaughter.) There was also "Baby Elephant Walk," and some smooth sounds, but the atmospheric African sounds are terrific.

Cover: Excellent (Many would grade this Near Mint, I grade conservatively. Still has it's Original Shrinkwrap)
Vinyl: Excellent (Has some of those faint, non-feelable, innersleeve rubbing areas, however as mentioned above, there are absolutely no "spindle hole" markings on the Labels to indicate any play time!)
