Georgia-born singer Otis Redding arrives fully formed on his debut, already working with a voice that carries urgency, ache and physical force in equal measure. Recorded in the early 60s, the album introduces the elements that would define his short career: phrasing that leans forward, vowels stretched and strained, emotion pushed directly through the microphone. Originals like 'These Arms Of Mine' and 'That's What My Heart Needs' arrive flayed, melody welded to confession. 'Stand By Me' and 'You Send Me' are dragged through grit, their familiar shapes bruised and tightened. Booker T. & the M.G.'s hold the ground as the Memphis Horns cut hard lines overhead. This is a voice discovering its force and beginning to bend soul to its will.
