Description
Here is DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS COTTON CLUB ORCHESTRA in two sizzling numbers from 1930: "RENT PARTY BLUES" and "ST. JAMES INFIRMARY."
"Rent Party" (take -3) is a big feature for the blazing soprano sax of JOHNNY HODGES. An inspiring hot number! "St. James" (take -2) gets the deluxe Ellington treatment.
It's a mystery to me, why the dolorous "St. James Infirmary," a.k.a. "Dying Crapshooter's Blues," a song that had been around for many years, all-of-a-sudden "Went Viral" in early 1930, with Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Alex Hill, George E. Lee, Rube Bloom and his Bayou Boys, Cab Calloway, Alphonse Trent and dozens of other bands, including Ellington's, ALL making records of it. I'll bet Joe Primrose, the "composer," was VERY pleased!
This original 1930 Romeo 1209 is in splendid EE- condition. A little scuffed, but hardly any wear at all.
