JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH PASSIO SECUNDUM MATTHAEUM (St Matthew Passion) 4 LP Linen Box  Set 

I have acquired a large classical collection of wonderful recordings from a very keen and dedicated collector.

All records are inspected very carefully and 

Gradings are based on Record Collector magazine.

I try to only offer recordings in a minimum of excellent Condition unless it is something particularly rare when I will do my best to describe any visual or audible flaws

BACH  Passio Secundum Matthaeum   performed by the Munich Bach Orchestra and choir Conducted by Karl RICHTER 

with Ernst Haefliger Tenor Kieth Engen Bass Antoine Fahberg Soprano Max Proebstl bass, Herta Topper Alto Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau Bass

CONDITION - Discs are  visually and audibly as follows 

Side 1 Visually  and audibly  Excellent throughout -2 pops for 1 Rev midway

Side 2 Visually Excellent and audibly Just under Excellent with very light crackles and 

and faint pops in the quietest sections

side 3 Visually and audibly Excellent throughout 3 faint pops of 1 rev towards the end of the band

side 4 Visually VERY GOOD and Audibly VERY GOOD there is a light surface mark covering about 8mm x 8mm 

at the end of the band of an irrregular  circular shape which is faintly audible

Side 5 Visually and audibly just under Excellent with some light hairline marks 

one  of which is across the band so some light crackles and faint pops in the quietest sections

side 6 Visually Excellent  and audibly just under Excellent with some light crackles and faint pops in the quietest sections

Side 7 Visually and Audibly Excellent throughout

Side 8 Visually Excellent and audibly just under Excellent with some light crackles and faint pops in the quietest sections. 1 pop of 1 revolution Midway

I have a feeling this set is a little prone to Static perhaps due to the heavy linen box .  

The linen Box and booklet are are EXCELLENT  condition complete  with original DG inner sleeves and  card recording insert   

The card insert has a small part circular mark next to the string credits ( as in photo 2) - 

The only other issue is that the previous owner has written a small  S number  on the front  top left corner 

of each inner sleeve in red pen   as in photo 2 ( It was his own catalogue system) 

This is of course over 50 years old now and is surprisingly good shape for its vintage 

First performed on Good Friday 1727 for solo voice double choirand double orchestra

The St Matthew Passion is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of Sacred music

Appreciation, performance and study of this sublime work has persisted to the present day-

Notably in the Netherlands  where a tradition has arisen where many professional and amateur

orchestras perform the work every year on Palm Sunday . This is a one of the first Stereo recordings

and is rightly highly regarded and housed in a deluxe box.
