Album number two from Julianna Riolino sees her take a big step forward from her debut All Blue. Whilst her debut was an assured and exciting statement; her songwriting had a youthful hurt and naivety. Which it should have done, most of those songs were written in her teenage years. Echo In The Dust finds her in more reflective and mature mode. It's an album that, she says, reflects on experiences, both good and bad, and works towards growth and personal evolution. If that all sounds a little like she's naval gazing, fear not, Echo In The Dust still possesses an unbridled positivity that is hard not to get swept up in. Musically, Riolino occupies a space on a crossroads where pop, 60s soul, country and rock have all turned up expecting to make a deal, and decided that the devil isn't the most trustworthy salesman. The result is an album that constantly surprises with its deft songwriting and occasionally unexpected turns. Seed sounds like Dolly Parton had she ever signed for Tamla Motown. Horns, blues licks and a brilliant vocal performance combine to create something that sounds like an instant classic. When it takes a short diversion into what sounds like a surf-doo-wop version of ABBA's 'Mama Mia', it genuinely comes as a shock. 'It's A Shakedown' pulls a similar trick. Initially it's a lazy, Pavement inspired country tune, then without warning there's a sudden break into a stabbing punk pogo section, before heading straight back into that laid back strum. This is the sound of an artist enjoying their songwriting. The combination of styles and joyful delivery of emotionally heavy subjects calls to mind Caroline Rose on her Loser album. That's not to say Riolino can't do serious, 'Let Me Dream' is a incredibly deft ballad that floats by on a breeze of slide guitar and angelic backing vocals. She's only two albums in and Echo In The Dust is already begging the question, when's her third?
