Description

Within four months of the Sunset Strip riots in Los Angeles, American International Pictures had rushed out a "counterculture" film called RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP, which takes the older genre of biker films and stirs hippie rebellion (and hippie chicks, obviously) into the stew. Music being more important to the new counterculture than it ever was to the Wild Bunch, bands are filmed performing garage punk numbers--which you will want enshrined in your permanent home music collection, by way of this great LP nugget. According to the sleeve, this was "The most shocking film of our generation," and that covers a lot.
In case you don't know, the Standells were the shit, having done several complete bangers like "Dirty Water" later included in classic anthologies like Lenny Kaye's "Nuggets" tribute to the moment 1964-67 when garage bands and psychedelic music were cross-pollinating like crazy. The Standells have two numbers on here, and the title song is a classic. .
What I never knew, though, was how good the legitimately Californian Chocolate Watchband were--millions of music lovers never listened to them because of their stupid name...Electric Prunes and Strawberry Alarm Clock already took up the whole pantry. Yet they have the two best cuts on this album, rightly closing out both Side A and B, and I'll really have to check out their two or three full albums.
This is a snapshot in time, all LA bands, as they were in 1966-7, and a scene never to be seen again...like all the best scenes.
