Description

Led Zeppelin II RL Robert Ludwig Hot Mix on Side 1 and Lee Hulko mix on Side 2

Atlantic Records SD 8236 1st U.S. pressing on matte cover with original Atlantic inner sleeve.

Columbia Terre Haute pressing plant information as indicated by the "CTH" on labels and the"T" etched in runouts.

Test played a the way through sounds FANTASTIC!!! So rare to find one of these that is cleanenough to hear the fabulous reverb and room sound! Usually scratched to death.

This is the unusual split with Lee Hulko who worked as a Mastering Engineer at Sterling Sound alongwith Robert Ludwig. In interviews Ludwig was surprised that here existed this version as he did notremember Hulko mastering side 2. This is also not the later repressing where the bass wasrolled off, this sounds like a two sided Ludwig to me!!

VINYL in VG+ though plays VG++ for 90% of the record!! Some very light hairlines only, the last two songs play VG+ while the rest is superb VG++

RL etched on side 1, LH etched on side 2

COVER in VG+ with solid seams and spine. yellowing/staining in white areas, spine yellowed/stained with light rubbing on edges, bottom portion partially crushed near bottom with more rubbing at corner. Corner bumps, solid!!!!

INNER SLEEVE in VG with one edge split 2", yellowing/staining.

Will be safely shipped in proper mailer with record removed to prevent splitting!

Notes:

Early press information:

This is the early pressing mastered at Sterling Sound by Bob Ludwig denoted by RL on side one and by Lee Hulko denoted by LH on side two.

Hulko was in charge of remastering some of side two which was the side that was causing the troubles with the original 2 sided RL mastered versions.

Ahmet Ertegün brought home a copy for his daughter, it skipped on her turntable so he had it recut to be less dynamic and less fleshed out in the bass.

It was certain parts in Ramble On and Moby Dick which were causing the needles to jump on certain turntables when the record first came out because of the bass. So they had Lee Hulko remaster side two.

Labels include "CTH" suffix (indicating Terre Haute pressing) and "Mfg By Atlantic Recording Corp., 1841 Broadway, New York, N.Y.".

The dead wax side two is slightly narrower than that on side one.

Later press information:

If this doesn't have "SS RL" and "SS LH" etched in the run-outs then it is a repress - remastered at Atlantic, rather than Sterling Sound.

Around 200,000ish pressings were done of Robert Ludwig's 'high mix' which, like Hendrix's 'Ladyland' 1st masters, caused some poor-quality phonograph needles to 'skip'. Thus, a repress ordered by Ertegün at Atlantic.
