Robben Ford (Woodlake, 16 dicembre 1951) è un chitarrista statunitense.

È cresciuto a Ukiah, dove ha cominciato a prendere lezioni di chitarra dal 1965 (all'età di 13 anni) e dove ha comprato la sua prima chitarra nel 1969 (all'età di 18 anni). Il padre Charles aveva una propria band (chiamata, appunto, Charles Ford Blues Band) nella quale suonavano anche Robben ed i suoi fratelli Mark (armonica a bocca) e Patrick (batteria). Quest'ultimo è oggi il leader della Ford Blues Band, che vede alla chitarra e alla voce Volker Strifler (il secondo chitarrista di Robben).

Robben Ford si è guadagnato una fama mondiale come chitarrista nel tour di Miles Davis del 1986, nel quale univa gli espedienti tecnici del blues e del jazz. Robben ha anche suonato nei dischi e nei concerti di Jimmy Witherspoon, George Harrison, Joni Mitchell e con gli Yellowjackets.

Il suo primo album - "Discovering the Blues" - è del 1972. I successivi "Schizophonic" (1976) e "The Inside Story" (1979) hanno ottenuto il disco d'oro nel 1980. Nel 1983 ha pubblicato "WordS AnD MusiC", seguito da "Robben Ford" nel 1986. L'album successivo, "Talk to Your Daughter" (1988), ha ottenuto il disco d'oro nel 1989. Negli anni Novanta i suoi lavori migliori sono stati "Handful of Blues", "Blues Connotation" e "Tiger Walk", con un ritorno alle sue radici blues.

Talk to Your Daughter  is a blues-rock album by Robben Ford, released in 1988. On his 1988 solo effort Talk to Your Daughter, singer/guitarist Robben Ford proves himself a master of sophisticated blues-rock guitar playing. The material is quite strong, and all the musicians perform at the highest level, but it's Ford's stellar soloing that makes this release. Fans of flailing '80s rock virtuosos would do well to check out Ford's exceptional work on Talk to Your Daughter. The musician's colorful yet controlled improvising and harmonic mastery is a rare and beautiful sonic treat. The title track is dripping with soulful, well-placed guitar lines that play like a master lesson of up-tempo blues phrasing that guitarists would do well to study. Other standouts include "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues." The fine arrangements and especially Vinnie Colaiuta's sharp drumming are all tightly wound with crisp, clear production that tops off "Talk to Your Daughter," making it a shining success. Listeners fond of Ford's work with the Yellowjackets and numerous side gigs, as well as guitarists and all musicians, should enjoy this very professional, succinctly executed offering. First rate!


Quando si cita il nome di Robben Ford, occorre necessariamente fare tanto di cappello, indipendentemente dal genere di musica preferito, poichè ci troviamo di fronte ad un vero signore delle sei corde, uno che è cresciuto a pane e jazz, ma che ha trovato nel blues la sua vera consacrazione internazionale. Chi lo ha visto in concerto sa che le sue performance riescono davvero ad essere trascinanti, il tutto grazie ad una tecnica cristallina e fortemente carica di feeling, non strabordante in un uso pazzesco di feedback ed effetti come l'ultimo Gary Moore, ma che più semplicemente punta all'anima di una musica che grazie a lui continua a scrivere pagine immortali.
Il chitarrista statunitense non è certamente un' artista di primo pelo, essendo nato nel 1951, e chiaramente ha dalla sua una serie innumerevoli di esperienze che lo hanno formato a livello musicale, prima fra tutti quella rappresentata dall'essere uno dei componenti della Charles Ford Band, la band del padre (guarda un pò che fortuna), anche se di ben altro spessore risultano le collaborazioni con mostri sacri del calibro di Miles Davis, Jimmy Whiterspoon e più recentemente con un altro chitarrista monstre, Larry Carlton.
Riuscendo a muoversi con disinvoltura in territori blues e jazz, nel 1988 grazie all'aiuto di Ted Templeman, noto per avere lavorato dietro la consolle per i Van Halen dell'era David Lee Roth e ancora prima per i Doobie Brothers, come produttore esecutivo e di Scott Ferguson, Ford realizzerà uno dei suoi album sicuramente più elettrici dove le coordinate blues, diventeranno intrecci irresistibili, capaci di conquistare un pubblico sempre più ampio che offrirà al chitarrista la possibilità di diventare una superstar anche in ambito discografico.

Ed in effetti Talk to your daughter ci presenta un gruppo di musicisti in forma smagliante, sicuramente capace di divertirsi durante la realizzazione del disco, dove tutto funziona alla perfezione, e di offrire una quarantina di minuti di musica con la M maiuscola, che sebbene ben inserita in un contesto rock blues, sa essere apprezzata anche da chi non è avvezzo a sonorità di questo tipo.
Il disco, come in ogni buon album blues che si rispetti, spazia tra composizioni originali dello stesso Ford e da classici intramontabili, basta citare la sempre splendida Ain't got nothin' but the blues, composta da Duke Ellington e qui riproposta in versione intimista con le corde della chitarra che vengono accarezzate e accompagnate da un timbro vocale sicuramente non eccellente (Ford infatti non possiede una voce negroide, e certamente non ha il carisma vocale ad esempio di Eric Clapton), ma che modula i toni in modo ragionato, come a volere chiedere scusa per questa propria "carenza", il tutto però con gentilezza, con garbo, come se il blues si fosse messo l'abito della festa.
Stesso concetto per Born under a bad sign praticamente incisa da tutti i bluesman, anche se la versione migliore resta indubbiamente quella di Albert King; vero grido di sofferenza e inno blues ultragenerazionale, qui trattata con i guanti gialli, ma pronta a graffiare sia a livello di arrangiamento che di solo chitarristico.
E che dire della saltellante Help the poor, che dal vivo trova una sua particolare dimensione venendo allungata a dismisura, trovando il conforto di un sassofono che instaura con la chitarra un dialogo quanto mai vivace, mentre nella versione da studio che troviamo nell'album , si bada più alla sostanza con un sound senza fronzoli che si avvicina notevolmente al rock, cosa che del resto troviamo nella title track, dove Ford fa letteralmente esplodere la sua sei corde. Un amore quindi per la musica che non conosce barriere se consideriamo i due opposti estremi del disco, la rockeggiante Wild about you, unita alla nera fino al midollo I got over it, dove special guest alla batteria troviamo il grande e sfortunato Jeff Porcaro dei Toto, e la dolce, intimista Getaway, uno dei due brani composti da Robben Ford presenti nel disco.

Inutile parlare della bravura dei musicisti che accompagnano Ford in questa sua avventura, ma una particolarità va sicuramente spesa per Vinnie Colaiuta, dotatissimo batterista che nel corso della sua carriera ha prestato le sue pelli ad artisti del calibro di Frank Zappa e Sting, oltre ad aver suonato anche con Vasco Rossi.
Colaiuta è colui che sostiene Ford nelle sue evoluzioni chitarristiche, grazia ad una macchina ritmica che non perde un colpo, incalzante quando serve, docile quando non bisogna spingere sull'acceleratore.

Si tratta di un disco consigliatissimo non solo agli amanti del blues, ma perchè no, anche agli amanti delle sonorità più ruvide; certo, qui non si troveranno distorsioni e velocità folli, solo un grande innamorato della propria musica, un innamorato di un genere, che grazie a lui continua a scaldare i cuori di tanta gente, e questo non è poco.

Biography

Ford was born in Woodlake but raised in Ukiah, California, and began playing the saxophone at age 10, picking up the guitar at age 13. Robben and his brothers Mark (mouthharp) and Patrick Ford (drums) had a band they named the Charles Ford Blues Band in honor of their father.

Ford began playing professionally at age 18 when the Charles Ford Blues Band got a gig backing Charlie Musselwhite. The band also recorded two albums The Charles Ford Band and Discovering the Blues. Next Ford put together a band with Bay Area musicians that became Jimmy Witherspoon's backup band. Ford recorded two albums with Witherspoon, Live and Spoonful'. The Ford Blues Band reunites periodically, and released live albums in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the 1970s, Ford began to branch out into Jazz fusion, and joined L.A. Express led by saxophonist Tom Scott in 1974. That same year they backed George Harrison on his American tour. In addition to recording fusion albums, they served as Joni Mitchell's backup band on Hissing of Summer Lawns and the live album, Miles of Aisles.

After leaving L.A. Express in 1976, Ford recorded his solo album, The Inside Story with a band that was to become the Yellowjackets. He went on to play a starring role on the first two Yellowjackets albums, although he was listed as a guest artist due to recording contract arrangements.

Ford worked briefly with Miles Davis in 1986; he can be heard on Davis' Montreux box set. Ford released his next album, called Talk to Your Daughter in 1988, a return to his blues roots. In 1989 he joined Philippe Saisse, Marcus Miller and J.T. Lewis in the cast of The Sunday Night Band for the second and final season of the acclaimed late-night NBC television musical performance program, Sunday Night. His best work in the 1990s include Robben Ford & the Blue Line, and Tiger Walk. In addition to recording and touring with his own blues band, Ford continued to tour and play with other bands/artists such as Jing Chi (his fusion band), Greg Allman and Phil Lesh. He has received nominations for four Grammy Awards.

Several Ford tribute bands exist, a statement to his artistry and popularity with the cognoscenti.

Ford was named one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century" by Musician magazine.

Ford uses Dumble Amplifiers. When travelling abroad he tends to use rented Fender amplifiers along with a Zendrive overdrive pedal by Hermida Audio. Guitar manufacturer Fender used to make a Robben Ford signature guitar, although lately Ford tends to favour Gibson Les Pauls and a custom-made model by Sakashta Guitars.

Ford is married to the cabaret singer, Anne Kerry Ford, and collaborated with her on various projects.
