NESTA ROBERT MARLEY Robert Marley / Bob Marley / Tuff Gong / Bobby Martell. (6th February 1945 to 11th May 1981). Marley was heavily influenced by Joe Higgs, one of Trenchtown's prominent Rasta's and Ska singers. In the early 60's Marley with his friend Bunny Livingstone met Peter Tosh - so the roots of the wailers was forming. Jimmy Cliff, another local musician who had already been successful with a few hits, introduced Marley to a local producer Leslie Kong (Beverley's Record Label). Marley cut his first single 'Judge Not' in 1961. He following up that with 'One More Cup Of Coffee', but for some reason released it under the name of 'Bobby Martell' . Neither of the records sold in any quantity. Unfortunately Marley didn't receive payment for this work, so Marley moved away from Beverley records. Marley formed his first harmony group in 1961 - Bunny Livingston, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso and Cherry Smith. The group became known as the Wailing Wailers. Their first recordings together were in 1963 at 'Studio one' with Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd (producer). The 1st two singles were 'It Hurts To Be Alone' and 'I'm Still Waiting' which both had some success. The 3rd single 'Simmer Down' in 1963 was a local hit. The Wailing Wailers sung over 70 tracks for Coxsone. The tracks were mainly Ska backed covers versions of Soul and Doo-Wop songs.
