Robin Trower
'Twice Removed From Yesterday'
Chrysalis, UK, 1973
CHR 1039
DEBUT SOLO album after leaving Procol Harum, showcasing Trower's gutsy, reverberating bluesy guitar work amidst a bunch of rudimentary songs of which he will better in years to come. Here we have the sound of a young man free at last to create a beef cake version of the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Reg Isodore on drums and Scottish vocalist and ex Stone The Crows man James Dewer on Jack Bruce duties. It's Dewer's show all the way, displaying a natural affiliation for the sort of dry, croaky blues howling that typifies the early seventies post British blues boom. And Trower? Well, finally that juicy fat sustain is let loose to drip like molten gold on tracks such as 'Rock Me Baby', 'Daydream' and 'Sinner's Song'. For all the accusations, Trower's Hendrix comparisons are tempered and reduced to simple observations; vibrato, sustain and a Stratocaster being the most obvious. I love his playing, always have, and always will and no, I will not level criticism of this or any other of his essential albums.
Produced by fellow Procol Harum man Matthew Fisher.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
