Label/Format: Decca – a 1970s boxed repress and scarcer small size format (Please see my label picture).

Label Conditions & Detail: Both very fresh, clean and attractive with only light, quite few and fine spindle marks. Compare these to the normal amount found on an unboxed original from the 1960s. Most played to near destruction on goodness knows what.

Cat Number: LK 4605.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 124 grams. On the lighter side for a Decca record but the sound quality is undiminished and this very clean copy sounds marvellous.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate (in theory), Rolling Stones records, as we all know, sold very well. The difference is, the majority of early originals were played into submission on early mono record players, hence they are well worn or even trashed. Very popular at parties or loaned out to friends, most are not even worth a second look. All this makes for a strong case for a very lightly played 70s copy - same record, slightly different label design, the music and sound quality is just the same as Decca quality did not decline. The significant difference is, this has never been played or subjected to old vintage equipment. So the sound is practically pristine, to hear that lovely mono sound crisp, clear, sharp and focused with no groove wear and distortion is a joy from a vinyl record. Put simply: if you want a copy of this landmark Rolling Stones debut album that plays like when pressed without the huge expense of an unboxed copy, look no further. Remember too, most unboxed copies are not ‘first’ pressings anyway, this record was pressed countless times and so many will fail to please these days, especially when played on high-end stereo equipment for which they were not really designed – that said, a stereo issue of this vintage album was not made. These boxed repressings in such fine condition are hardly common themselves.

Original Year of Release: 1964. This a mid-70s pressing.

Matrix Nos: XARL 6271-6A / XARL 6272-12A

Brief Info: Debut album from rock’s most durable and evergreen band, the music dates way back to 1964 and most will know all about it. I prefer to concentrate more on it’s condition.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: no matter their age, these Decca covers were made with fairly thin card and laminated with Clarifoil. All factors for major creasing and laminate lifting and blisters. Very rarely does one escape – this has – well worth another look at this one. The backs are highly prone to grubbiness, creasing and toning, this has little.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the spine on to the back, just the same as the earlier examples. The back is smooth and matt. The top and bottom edges are also protected. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Lamination & Front: This retains a fine shine and clarity with only light friction rubs or dulling seen under light. Around half a dozen very fine and light hairline creases on the spine edge and just one very small and faint half moon away from the sides this hardly even shows. A few light press marks near the top left but little else to fault. The lack of lifting is always great news on such a dark cover and few will ever escape. Combine that with the lack of creasing and you have a near exceptional Rolling Stones cover. Not a hint of a lift or blister at all and for visual pleasure, this will take a fair amount of beating.

Cover Back: The exposed back with large areas of white is always vulnerable to grubbiness and ageing. Light traces around the edges with a very thin sliver of toning near the bottom corner. Few marks and only a small few surface hairlines on the laminate end on the spine edge. Devoid of ringwear and retaining a fine degree of freshness, this back complements the lovely looking front well.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both very straight and almost as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed, untrimmed. Record enters on this fragile edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression mild and light – the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: These have excellent shape and show little wear at all, faint darkening likely from the adhesive.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this typically fragile cover, one that will prove difficult to find substantially better. This was a very popular album throughout the 60s and 70s and few will show much less evidence of use and handling. That shine, clarity, lacking of blistering and significant creasing on the front is a joy to view. This splendid item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY NEAR EXCELLENT: This comes with it’s original red mono, polylined inner. Mildly darkened with fine and light adhesive darkening on the bottom edge. Two very neat window circles and the lining ultra clear and barely crinkled at all. One corner crease only and all the edges unsplit with no repairs. This is date-coded 7-74.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): one fine surface mark on side two (no sound of course), any other surface trace marks are ultra fine and faint seen critically under light. Very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Early pressed examles so often with mazes of marks, deep penetrating scratches and ugly fingermarks. Chalk and cheese, this has nothing even remotely like that – I won’t touch, buy or offer such rubbish. These types have had their day and those that survive like this and play to the highest possible standards are the ones I want to offer. As I have said, Rollings Stones records are not that hard to find, but top copies are a different story whether boxed or unboxed, it’s sound quality that’s of paramount concern for me. Visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very enjoyable record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Although hardly a hi-fi masterpiece this has a lovely raw production that was just perfect for it’s vintage and will rarely be heard cleaner or better than this from a vinyl record. No surface sounds, clipping or crackle and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing (as you would expect from Decca). The sound remains fully focused and sharp, few ever will sound this good especially when played on highly revealing equipment. No heavyweight tracking, thick heavy stylus have ruined this one, the advantages of a later pressing. Remember, this is still record deeply into it’s thirties now and it remains impressive in all departments. Both channels are clean and sharp (often mono records play quietly though one channel only for the other to be noisy), this caused by uneven wear from badly aligned or chipped pick-ups. Clearly well stored and carefully handled, I feel sure this has not even seen daylight for decades. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, it will remind many of what this title once sounded like when first purchased and not through swathes of crackle, sound degrading and noise. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. If sound is paramount over label design and issue day, this will please.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
