ROLLING STONES ‘BEGGARS BANQUET’ ORIGINAL 1ST ISSUE 1968 RED DECCA LABEL MONO VINYL LP IN GATEFOLD LAMINATED SLEEVE
Sleeve condition: Between Vg++ and Ex-. Spine scuffing to the middle, light wear, a little bumping to corners.
Record condition: Overall, Ex-, it has been played, has spindle marks and has previous owner’s name to label. In contrast to most that turn up the vinyl is in really, really nice, clean condition and the record has obviously been well cared for. There are a couple of very light, surface only marks on Side 1, none of which affect play or are audible in any way. I have been meticulous in playing through the LP and it plays Ex- without a trace of distortion or other reproduction defects. The remainder of the vinyl visually is unmarked and shiny with the kind of deep, black lustre that only well-kept, early pressings of this kind can have.
This is really quite a rare thing. Lots of blue label stereo copies around but as that was the norm by 1968, Mono recordings are very scarce. The Mono mix is quite different and overall it would be fair to say that it is a much more intense, in your face mix, in common with a lot ‘60’s 45 rpm beat and freakbeat singles.
Beggars Banquet was last of the Rolling Stone's LPs to be released with a dedicated mono version. The LP was released only in the UK and features a great, different mix of 'Sympathy For The Devil'. The rest of the album is allegedly just a fold-down from the stereo masters but most agree that it sounds like there is a heavier bass and less guitar throughout and seems more 'solid'. Certainly the 'Sympathy' mix is very different indeed and it's got a driving rhythm and force that you just don't get with the stereo version.
