Description
The Rolling Stones 1A/4A
This very early mono pressing on the famous grooved 'unboxed red Decca' label plays with stunning audio and no interference. No clicks, no pops, no crackle the playback is absolutely stunning! The cover is also very clean with no writing etc and only minor shelf wear.
This is one of earliest known labels as it 'Made In England' on the top of the label and 'Recording First Published 1964'. These were only produced in late 1964. The KT tax code is stamped on both run out grooves.

Visual grading
This is the most impressive Stones' debut LP on an 'unboxed red Decca' label I have ever seen. It has been fantastically well preserved and it has definitely not been overplayed as there is not a great deal of spindle wear. The astounding quality of the audio confirms that. It really is so clean and both sides are visually stunning to say the least. S1 is immaculate and has only a small number of mega faint sleeve removal hairlines and one very tiny 'mark' but this has no affect on the audio at all. S2 has a couple of more hairlines and two mega small 'marks' but again they have no affect on the astonishing quality of the audio and as you can see is graded as Mint- anyway! Now 54 years old it is so rare to find their debut LP in this superlative condition and it still has that stunning mirror-like glossy sheen as when first released! You would be hard pressed to find a better looking vinyl and in all honesty at first glance it looks almost 'as new'! And S1 has the 1A matrix making this even more of a find! A beautiful example and a final upgrade archive pressing of that I am certain.
Play grading
'Route 66' begins S1 with stunning clarity and has to be the 'cleanest' version I have ever heard on an unboxed red label pressing. Plus this side has the 1A matrix! It is remarkably quiet on the run in grooves and there is no interference on the entire track. No clicks or pops and no static or crackle either and there is no distortion either which is a rarity. A superb start to the album and it easily grades as Near Mint if not better the audio is of a 'high end' standard. There is barely any static in the dead wax and 'I Just Want To Make Love To You' then plays very clearly from the outset and again there is no 'background' at all not even on the fade out! If I am being super-critical there is perhaps just a minimal amount of distortion on the 'top end' but that could well be just the way it was recorded, it is a high volume track after all. It is by no means intrusive and it still plays incredibly well. 'Honest I Do' is also mega impressive when you consider how quiet it is. There is barely any static and any you do hear is so quiet as to be hardly worth a mention! The clarity is superb for a 54 year old record! For fear of being repetitive 'I Need You Baby' is once again absolutely stunning! The quiet intro has no 'background' and the remainder plays with a clarity and depth you so rarely hear on these mega early pressings. There is no 'muddiness' to the sound, you can hear each note so clearly and the strength of the bass is sublime. I can't quite believe what I am hearing - no interference again! And as if further proof was needed the fade out is 'as new' as the day when first released back in '64. I can confidently grade this as Mint- I have never heard better. 'Now I've Got A Witness' also plays to the same Mint- standard. There is wonderful depth throughout and again a very impressive deep bass sound. 'Little By Little' ends this amazing side with great quality but with perhaps a 'little' distortion on the top end, a common feature with any final track. Don't get me wrong it is very minimal and does not impair the quality of the listen and it still plays very clearly. I cannot adequately explain just how superbly this side plays so I hope I have done it justice! The clarity throughout is exceptional and it's so rare for a 1A unboxed red side to play as clearly as this. No clicks, no pops, no crackle and almost no static, wow!
Just prior to the first note on S2 there is no lead in static whatsoever and I am delighted to say 'I'm A King Bee' then has the same level of clarity as per S1. One look at the vinyl confirms it has not been overplayed plus the fact it has been so well preserved down the years accounts for the immaculate audio on display here. This opening track again grades as Mint- the playback was faultless and again no 'background' on the fade out! With complete silence in the dead wax 'Carol' then plays with great power and definition and no obvious distortion at all. This is rare for this track because it is so 'high octane' which can often affect the playback if there is some groove wear which there is not. This is another stunning track that impresses on every level. As my regulars know I grade honestly and listen to every second of every LP and I apologise in advance if I repeat myself but I do sincerely believe in providing a full and comprehensive grading. With that in mind I can say that the fade out here is mind-blowing! It is quite long and yet there is no interference at all. The long version of 'Tell Me (You're Coming Back)' plays impeccably from the very first groove and the intro quite honestly is 'as new'. This quality continues to the end with no distortion and the quieter sections play with stunning precision. This is 100% faultless audio that you hardly ever find! 'Can I Get A Witness' provides further evidence of a vinyl so well cared for down the years. It is worth saying there is no distortion again which is very much a rarity for this track. It needs saying - there is no 'background' on this track whatsoever! Thus far I would say every track on this side is of Mint- quality, no exaggeration. 'You Can Make It If You Try' is yet another sublime track from start to finish. It plays with wonderful definition and dare I say, there is no interference of any kind. 'Walking The Dog' ends the album in suitably impressive fashion but with a little distortion on the vocal here and there. I may be doing myself a disservice by even saying that because as any audiophile knows it is very common on final tracks and it is very minimal here anyway. It is totally non-intrusive and the playback was still very impressive.
In summary this mega early pressing is a final upgrade archive version for certain. I have never heard an 'unboxed red Decca' play with such immaculate clarity and how incredible is that an album of 54 years old has no clicks or pops? Plus no crackle and barely any static or distortion? It is so rare to find one in this condition and as stated in the visual description the vinyl is also beautifully clean. The cover is in excellent condition with only minor shelf wear and I am sure any 'Stones' fan would love to have this in their collection :-)
The Cover
The laminated 'Clarifoil' cover printed by 'MacNeill' is in excellent all round condition and has no writing or major marking on it at all. The top edge is in perfect condition with no rubs and the bottom edge has only one very small rub mark on it. The thin pinched spine is still 100% legible and all that can be seen is 4/5 tiny marks caused by some small creases either side of the spine. The corners are in great condition with hardly any wear and the same can be said for the opening edge, it is very clean. The laminate on the front has no splits or lifting and there is only one obvious crease top left and a small sticker removal mark in the same corner also. The back cover is very clean for its age and has only light marking/fading here and there and a little ringwear but there is no writing on it at all, a rarity! The flipbacks are in excellent order with no real staining on the edges. Overall quite an impressive cover.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined 'Patents Pending' sleeve has no splits or tears and only light fading around the edges and minor creasing.
The labels
The grooved red labels are in fantastic condition with minimal spindle wear and no marking or writing. The deep red has lost none of its original colour at all. Fantastic examples.
