Description

ROLLING STONES "Hot Rocks" rare SHELLY 11-18-71 alt mix

ROLLING STONES "Hot Rocks" orig 1970 US LP w/ the SHELLY 11-18-71 alternate mix!

London Records - 1970
Country where manufactured: US
Condition = (cover/vinyl)= VG+/VG+

For those who collect the ROLLING STONES this LP needs no introduction, it has been and remains one of the rarest and most desirable ROLLING STONES vinyl rarities created. I will not go into the story myself, but instead here is an exerpt from this great "Rolling Stones: US LP label history web site about the "Shelly" Hot Rocks LP:

Who Is "Shelley"?

Could it be a reference to famed poet Percy Shelley? or the Rolling Stones' French press agent June Shelley? In fact, it's neither. This notation is indicative of an item from the Shelley Products Ltd. pressing plant (closed in the mid-1980's) of Long Island, NY, and it makes a big difference on the double-album Hot Rocks 1964-1971.

Upon its initial pressing (Nov. 18, 1971), alternate versions of Brown Sugar and Wild Horses were included on the Hot Rocks master plate. These versions first appeared in the brilliant 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter. Since there was no clear reference to their origin on the album cover, sleeve or label, one must look at the trail-off vinyl (the smooth vinyl located nearest the disc label) and look for the word Shelley and the date 11-18-71.

Shelley

The identifying mark is not easy to locate or read, but the mystery does not end if and when it is found. It seems that this "alternate pressing" was soon pulled in favor of a set which contained the single versions of Sugar and Horses. However, Shelley wasn't quite done, as the name reappeared for a short time afterwards with either a later date, or no date at all.

The original Shelley 11-18-71, with the alternate takes, may fetch $1000 USd. A second pressing with the word Shelley and with or without a later date, will still get you double ($25-30) a regular pressing ($12-15). Thus far, reports of 11-18-71, 12-3-71, and 12-6-71 have been clearly identified.

One final note on determination - you should find Shelley on all four sides of the 2-disc set, but the date (if there is one) of 11-18-71 need only be on side four. It is possible to come across a set that has that specific date on any of the other three sides except the fourth, yet that is meaningless. The names will often not be written in the same manner, though it is more common to see script, there are editions that have Shelley in block print.

You can read an extensive page about ROLLING STONES label variation by clicking to this very informative site where this was found: THE ROLLING STONES: US LP Label History.  This copy is one of a few of these I have found over the years, and it is not in perfect shape but it is still a nice copy of this monster rarity.  There were some of these which have a 'pressing bubble' in the track "Wild Horses", and this is one of those- but it plays through fine on my Technics turntable.  The other LP is in nice shape too, both have minor signs of handling but nothing deep, and cover shows light signs of handling, but you can always swap it out with another if you need to.  Also has the proper original London inner sleeves. And it is starting with a low opening bid of $24.99- as stated above copies of this LP have changed hands for up to $1000!  Please check my other auctions, I'm auctioning off a load of other rare ROLLING STONES LPs this week.  CLICK HERE to see my other items.

I've always got other LPs/CDs/45s/posters/magazines/rarities/etc being listed, most are starting at $3.99 which is as low as I can start them without giving them away, so please CLICK HERE to see my other items. A 30 year stockade of collectibles is being sorted through slowly but surely, many great things will go up for auction so keep your eyes peeled for upcoming stuff too!  Also, since my auctions start throughout the day, please note closing times vary. If you haven't already, I recommend you check out some of the free 'bid sniping' programs out there. I use them for buying and it's a great way to not forget to bid on auctions!

Please read the following before you bid! I know it's a lot, but I have tried to put any/all information you may need here, and it's important! And you may find answers to any questions you may have here too. Thanks.

PAYMENT, SHIPPING & HANDLING:

THE MOST IMPORTANT: If you win, PLEASE wait to get and winning bid ebay invoice from me with SHIPPING AND HANDLING TOTAL before sending any payment!  Please do not just send a Paypal payment without getting a total from me! It will delay the process if you just "make up" postage amount and send it in, so please don't! You can use the PAY NOW or CHECKOUT after you have info from me on how much shipping is.

My shipping and handling are now based on the final price of the order.  This is an effort to streamline my postage operations and make it easier since ebay no longer allows us to charge for different services that shipping an item might require.  My "by the price" shipping model is the same that is used on many mail order sites for clothing and other items where you pay postage based on cost of your order, not the items.  Generally, the cost of the item (which is usually not known until auction closes) determines how it will need shipped and much it will cost to mail, so this new method I am using seems to make sense with that.  Of course if you win something that is tiny that is light to ship for $200 I will do what I can to give a discount for shipping.  These cases will be decided by me at time of auction closing, so please do not try and negotiate.  Unless I tell you otherwise the postage will be what it is in the chart below.

Combined orders will of course save on shipping, which is a great reason to check out the other items I have up right now. I will be happy to send items won at same time by one buyer in same package.

Payments are preferred by PAYPAL which is fastest & easiest, at this point it seems like it's the only way to accept payment for the types of items I sell.  Please read up on what ebay says is safe on their page of ebay payment laws, which I will not try to explain as they are rather extensive. This is the link to their site explaining payment rules: Ebay Payment Rules). I'm not signed up for any of those other electronic payment systems they mention, so I guess it's PAYPAL only folks!  Shipping/Handling for orders is determined on a per order basis.

Payment due within 7 days of auction closing or ebay will be notified via non-paying bidder notice and appropriate feedback will be left.  I reserve the right to cancel transactions in which bidders can not comply with these terms- I am not interested in chasing down payments.  Please communicate and let me know what's going on with your purchase, and I will do the same.

Items won will be shipped to the shipping address on your Ebay account by USPS, but now that they charge by zone s/h must be calculated at end of auction.

POSTAGE OPTIONS:

  • US orders for LPs or heavy items will be sent by: MEDIA MAIL.
  • US orders for smaller items will be sent by: FIRST CLASS MAIL.
  • US orders that are requested can be sent by: PRIORITY MAIL.
  • International orders will be sent by: FIRST CLASS MAIL INTERNATIONAL (which is like old regular AIR MAIL)
  • Internatinal orders over $50 will be sent by: PRIORITY MAIL INTERNATIONAL

I only charge for s/h costs incurred in handling your order. I use real LP/45/padded mailers, I don't pack your order in between two random pieces of cardboard I found in the trash.  When sending vinyl I always remove LP/45 from sleeve to avoid damage in shipping. I make every effort to be an efficient shipper, and will get your stuff out to you within a few days of payment being received. I also buy a lot on ebay, and know how annoying it is to wait- so I will be fast as I can! I have been buying/selling on ebay for over 10 years, so please bid with confidence!

Thanks for your help with keeping the transactions smooth.

SHIPPING/HANDLING CHART:

This is a chart for postage of LPs/CDs/items I sell based on the new postage rates as of August 2009, and all orders over $50 include insurance in s/h. In accordance with ebays new rules as of Sept 2009 sellers are not allowed to offer or charge for insurance and it must be included in s/h cost when deemed necessary to use.  Please do not use this chart to send payment, it is only so you can have an idea of what it will cost instead of asking for each auction! I will send you final cost when auction closes, and if I am able to offer a discount on shipping because you ordered a light item I will do so.  HOWEVER, this will be up to my discretion and you should be prepared to pay the postage listed below based on your winning bid for your item.    Thanks for your help in making our transaction a smooth one!

SHIPPING AND HANDLING CHART:   USA INTERNATIONAL FINAL COST OF ITEM OR ITEMS WON:     $0-$5.00 $5 $10 $5.01-10.00 $7 $15 $10.01-$20.00 $9 $20 $20.01-$50.00 $12 $25 $50.01-$100.00 $15 $30 $100.01-$200.00 $20 $35 $200.01 + $25 $40

CONDITION & GRADING:

I have put a section about my grading scale/methods on my 'about me' page, which you can click here to see.

FEEDBACK:

I will be happy to exchange feedback with anyone I complete a transaction with. If you would like to get feedback, I ask that you let me know we've completed the transaction by leaving feedback for me after you recieve your item, at which time I will do the same for you! If you have any problems with item, please write before leaving feedback to try and resolve issue. And, as stated above, I will also leave appropriate feedback for non-paying bidders, but only after proper time/chances have passed.

Thank you!
