Ladies and Gents, we have a privilege of presenting a chunk of Rock history: the IMPOSSIBLY rare acetate of one of the greatest Rock albums of all time, one of the greatest Rolling Stones albums of all time, and the very final album the group recorded with Brian Jones (he does not play on all tracks, having been somewhat slightly dead for about five months by the time the album came out; on other tracks he is replaced by either Ry Cooder or Mick Taylor)

Here’s how this acetate differs from the released version:

(1)            Some songs have different titles than on the official 1969 release. For example: on this acetate, Gimme Shelter  is titled ‘Gimme SOME Shelter’; Midnight Rambles is titled “Midnite Rambler” and You’ve got the silver is titled “You’ve got the silver now”.

(2)          At least one track (“Country Honk, which is, in essence, an early demo-like version of the ‘Honky Tonk Women”) has a different timing than on the official release (the version on the acetate times the song at 3 minutes, zero seconds; the official release clocks in at 3 minutes, seven seconds. We were unable to determine whether the song is actually shorter or not and, if it is, where the difference is. Hypothetically, it is possible that the seven-second difference is a measuring- or rounding-up error of some sort (or perhaps the engineer did not account fade into the timing). However, this appears unlikely, as all other songs on the acetate clock in at exactly the same time as the official versions (plus or minus one second). “Country Honk” is the only song on the album with a significant time deviance from the official version.

(3)          We were unable to detect any major difference between the version or mixes of  the songs on this acetate and the official versions, but this does not mean that they do not exist. A careful listener or a lifelong Stones buff will probably be able to detect some with relative ease. There are two smaller differences that caught our ear, though: Ry Cooder’s slide guitar on title track is audibly stronger, more forceful and up front in the mix  than on the released version (it almost “stings” in some parts of the songs) ;  and the overall “feel” of the album, the sharpness and  the edginess of the classic Stones sound attack is significantly more pronounced and vivid than on  the released vinyl (and CD) version.

(4)          To these ears, ‘You’ve got the silver’ sounds (even) more sloppy and loose,  more relaxed than on the official release. We A&B-ed it against the official release and could not reach a definite conclusion. It is possible that the song has a marginally different mix, but it is also possible that this is a total misperception on our part..

***

For its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, songwriters and general public, or for some other inherent quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, show business professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, the legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice , Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton, Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). IMPORTANT NOTE: While this acetate is in a very decent state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.

This acetate is in about GOOD  TO GOOD +   condition. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.

Now for the bad news: the disc skips repeatedly (we counted at least 10 skips, most of which are in the second half of the ‘Midnight Rambler: However, we note that the skipping is erratic and extremely inconsistent (no spot seams to skip the same twice), which leads us to believe that the skipping is “environmental”, i.e. something inherent in our turntable setup, rather than caused by the acetate itself. It is entirely possible that the buyer will be able to force the disc to play without skipping by using different calibration and stylus pressure, however this is merely a speculation on our part. Buyer beware!.

ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 4
