THE ROLLING STONES - No. 1 ACETATE
This is the 1st ALUMINIUM ACETATE of THE ROLLING STONES first ever album; the original first cut of The Rolling Stones No.1.
A unique piece of rock 'n' roll history, and an extremely rare collectible. This is a true one off and the only example in the world, made with the DECCA Mono White Label on both sides of the aluminium disc.
A UNIQUE ORIGINAL UK 1st EVER CUT ACETATE, IN STUNNING CONDITION.
The 1st CUT ALUMINIUM ACETATE of The Rolling Stones first ever album, and undoubtedly one of the rarest examples of an Acetate LP record that has ever come up for sale on the open market. This particular piece of pop culture record history has never come up for sale at auction before, and has to be one of the rarest acetates ever produced.
While Acetates of The Rolling Stones subsequent vinyls have come up for sale, few were printed on the DECCA Mono White Label, this one being the first, then followed by first cuts of; 'Aftermath', 'Flowers', 'His Satanic Majesties Request', 'Let It Bleed' and 'Get Your Ya Ya's Out'.
(see images below)
This 1st Acetate, Made In England in 1964, with the Catalogue Number - 4605 - comes with the short, first sound cut and the 2:52 version of the track, 'Tell Me'.
This Acetate captured the first recording of The Stones first complete LP, making it one of the rarest LP record collectibles ever to come up for sale.
This is a great opportunity to own a unique piece of musical history, from my own personal collection, which I purchased directly from one of the senior sound engineers at DECCA Records.

ACETATE VALUE
Acetates have become increasingly valuable, recognised now as the original recording cuts in their earliest forms, that went on to make some of the most iconic pieces of vinyl of the 20th century.
The acetate of an early version of The Velvet Underground's first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, sold on eBay for US $25,200.
This acetate of The Rolling Stones first ever album has never come up for sale before.
An early three track Rolling Stones demo acetate sold at Sotheby's in 2002 for $17,810 (£10,800).
The earliest known tape of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards rehearsing, sold at auction for £50,250.
The Quarrymen – "That'll Be the Day" / "In Spite of All the Danger" (UK 78–rpm, acetate in plain sleeve, from 1958), had a guide price in Record Collector magazine of £200,000, listing the guide price in the issue 408 (December 2012). The one existing copy is currently owned by Paul McCartney.
The Beatles: 'Til There Was You', a 10” acetate, sold at auction for £77,500.
Said to be a 'Holy Grail' for collectors of Beatles records, the 10” acetate of an early demo by the Beatles, featuring the songs ''Til There Was You' and b-side, 'Hello Little Girl', (misspelled on the disc as 'Hullo Little Girl'), was found in the attic of Mr. Les Maguire, who had come into possession of the record during his time as keyboardist for Gerry and The Pacemakers. It sold in Warrington to an unnamed buyer in March 2016.
The acetate of Elvis Presley's, "That's All Right", sold for $82,393.60 in 2013. The only known copy of Presley's first recording — a 78 rpm acetate from 1953 featuring "My Happiness", backed with, "That's When Your Heartaches Begin", —sold for $300,000 at a Graceland auction in 2015.
Presley's "My Happiness" acetate was purchased by musician Jack White for $300,000. It was then re-released by Third Man Records, on Record Store Day in 2015.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE ROLLING STONES FIRST ALBUM
This is the original Aluminium Acetate recording, with the original 2.52 minute version of the track, 'Tell Me', a totally different take than the one that would become the standard long version. It's thought that the producer used the wrong demo tape for the acetate. Jagger's singing and Wyman’s bass lines are significantly different than on the corrected version, and there are various other sound and timing changes noticeably different to the later recordings.
The Rolling Stones debut album was issued in April 1964, with the song, 'Tell Me', having the writing credit to, "Jagger / Richard”, soon to become famous worldwide. This was a completely different, shorter version to the one they would re-record. The Rolling Stones, Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton wanted to extend the song's length and further, numerous takes were made. The official re-recorded version had a running length of 4:06 minutes. When the full album's recording sessions were finished, the tapes were assembled to begin manufacturing the LP.
This original 1st Acetate has the first short cut version of Tell Me. The version of 'Tell Me' on the first cut was made with another short version, forcing a with-drawl of unsold copies.
The first cut on this acetate is different to the consequent versions in a number of ways, and the original track has a far more raw, and punchy feel.
ACETATE PROCESS
Due to their rarity acetates command high prices at auction, with values soaring in recent years, depending on just how rare or historic the acetate is.
Acetate / Lacquer was usually made with ultra high-grad methyl cellulose sprayed onto a thick aluminium disc. Reference acetates were primarily intended to make certain that the record sound was correct, before any vinyl pressings could take place. Acetates were used to demonstrate the recordings to disk and were not meant or designed to be played.
Acetates are Aluminium discs of various sizes (7, 10 or 12 inch) with a thin coating over the top of the metal. Unmistakably cold to the touch, these discs are INDIVIDUALLY cut by the master cutter as a "pre" test. As such, EACH acetate is unique, and acetates constitute some of the rarest items in the whole field of record collecting.
They are also known as a test acetate, dubplate, (a term from Jamaican reggae culture, now also applied to individually recorded discs of solid plastic), lacquer, (a term used by engineers in the recording industry), transcription disc, (a special recording intended for, or made from, a radio broadcast) or instantaneous disc, that can be played immediately after recording without any further processing.
Unlike ordinary vinyl records, which are quickly formed from lumps of plastic by a mass-production molding process, an acetate disc is created by using a recording lathe to cut an audio-signal-modulated groove into the surface of the special lacquer-coated blank disc, a real-time operation requiring expensive, delicate equipment and significant expertise.
They are made for special purposes, and never for sale to the general public. They can be played on normal record players but suffer from wear far more quickly than vinyl.
Acetates are highly prized for their rarity, especially when they contain unpublished material.
THIS IS AN ORIGINAL ACETATE AND IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND EVER TO COME UP FOR SALE.
THIS ACETATE HAS BEEN CAREFULLY TESTED AND PLAYS WITH NO SKIPS OR JUMPS. AS WITH MOST AUDIBLE ACETATE PRESSINGS THERE IS SURFACE NOISE THROUGHOUT.
ACETATES WERE MADE TO CAPTURE THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF AN ARTIST, CREATING THE PHYSICAL CONTOURS THAT WOULD LATER BE USED TO CREATE VINYL PRESSINGS, IF THE RECORD WAS ACCEPTED FOR RELEASE.
PLEASE NOTE:
An acetate disc is made for recording purposes, not for sale to the general public. They can be played on normal record players but will suffer from wear far more quickly than vinyl.
Acetates are highly prized for their rarity, especially when they contain unpublished material.
DUE TO THE FRAGILE NATURE of ACETATE DISCS, THEY ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR GENERAL USE / OR GENERAL PLAY!
The Rolling Stones is the debut album by The Rolling Stones, released by DECCA in the United Kingdom on 16 April 1964, and sometimes known as Stones No.1.
Recorded at Regent Sound Studios in London over the course of five days in January and February 1964, The Rolling Stones was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton. The Rolling Stones was originally released by DECCA in the UK, while the US England newest Hit-makers appeared on the London Labels label, with the track "Not Fade Away" (the a side of the band's third UK single) replacing "Mona (I Need You Baby)
The majority of the tracks reflect the band's love for authentic R & B material. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were still much fledging songwriters during early 1964, contributing only one original composition to the album: "Tell Me". Two numbers are credited to "Nanker Phelge" - a pseudonym the band used for group compositions from 1963 to 1965. Phil Spector and Gene Pitney both contributed to the recording sessions, and are referred to as "Uncle Phil and Uncle Gene" in the subtitle of the Nanker Phelge instrumental "Now I've Got a Witness".
The album cover photo was taken by Nicholas Wright. The cover bears no title or identifying information other than the photo and the Decca logo - an "unheard of" design concept originated by manager Andrew Oldham. The Rolling Stones became one of 1964's biggest sellers in the UK, staying at #1 for 12 weeks.
THE RECORD - Visual Grading
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE PLEASURE TO HANDLE THIS RAREST PIECE OF MUSIC CULTURAL HISTORY. COLD TO THE TOUCH and HEAVY WEIGHT, IT HAS THAT UNIQUE ACETATE CHARACTER.
IT IS IN STUNNING CONDITION WITHOUT ANY OBVIOUS SURFACE MARKS OTHER THAN TWO EXTREMELY LIGHT SLEEVE REMOVAL HAIRLINES AND SOME VERY FAINT HANDLING MARKS. THERE IS NO LOSS OF LACQUER TO THE PLAYING SURFACE OR OXIDISED MOISTURE SPOTS, WHICH ACETATES OFTEN SUFFER FROM. THE ACETATE FINISH REMAINS BRIGHT WITH A GREAT LUSTRE.
The surfaces have only the faintest of handling marks, which can be seen under a very strong spot light.
Graded at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.
THE LABELS
This ultra rare pressing comes with WHITE DECCA NOT FOR SALE labels, in stunning condition, no marks or writing, no discernible spindle wear, and NO discernible spindle traces. Making this a true rarity in stunning condition. Great all round unmarked examples. STUNNING!

Low Res Examples of subsequent Rolling Stones cut Acetate discs sold at auction on the DECCA Mono White Label
TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:
Acetates are manufactured on a thick slab of aluminium, and unlike vinyl LPs are not prone to warping or disfiguration.
As is the case, with this one, the disc is completely flat and true, with no signs of warping what so ever, when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:
All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.
-
VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
.
IMAGES and INFORMATION
We only use photographs of the item for sale taken with professional digital cameras. The images are designed to be as clear as possible, giving an exact representation of the item.
