This very first 1A/1A mono pressing on the red unboxed Decca grooved label comes complete with the highly collectable 'Paste Over' cover. It isn't difficult to find a cover with the 'Blind Man' text (despite what many sellers say!) but it is now rare to find the 'Paste Over' and especially at a reasonable starting price. This particular one is in excellent condition and has very minor wear only. The audio does not disappoint either!

Visual grading
This vinyl is visually stunning and is easily the most impressive 1A/1A first pressing I have ever seen. There are only a few faint hairlines and none of them are what you describe as prominent, it really is so clean! It has such a lovely glossy sheen it certainly belies its age. There are no scratches and only one mega tiny faint mark right at the end of S1, you have to look very closely to see it! Rarely there is not that spindle wear so the record has definitely not been overplayed. The labels and run out grooves are also very clean.
Play grading
The intro on 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love' plays very clearly with only minimal light static. It continues in much the same way with only a little background static here and there. I did hear a couple of faint clicks in the middle section and another one a little later but they are quiet and non-intrusive. The vast majority of this opening track plays with great depth and clarity.
'Down Home Girl' is similar with intermittent light static. It is worth pointing out this is not crackle! Light static is not intrusive in my opinion and this track plays very clearly with only a couple of clicks on the fade out.
'You Can't Catch Me' is superb from start to finish. It has impressive depth and a strong deep bass that adds so much to the mix. This is a stunning version and has barely any distortion either, it could not play much better, and the fade out here is immaculate. This grades as Near Mint it is that good.
The quiet intro on 'Time Is On My Side' has only minimal static and as the vocal comes in the audio is very impressive. This clarity continues and there is only the odd light static sound. You expect some static on a vinyl of this age but there is no crackle and no clicks or pops either! Basically no intrusive interference at all.
'What A Shame' plays incredibly well on the quiet intro and thereafter plays to the same high standard. This is a superb version and there is barely any static. The long instrumental section that brings the track to a close is so good and plays with such a strong deep resonance and hardly any distortion. One of the 'cleanest' I have heard in a long time!
'Grown Up Wrong' ends the album in fine style with great sound quality. So often 'final tracks' have a fair amount of distortion but there is none here whatsoever. It plays with immense depth and clarity and the only 'background' is a small number of 'swipe' sounds on the fade out per revolution of the record.

'Down The Road Apiece' begins very clearly with barely any static which is rare for the opening grooves on a vinyl of this age. From then on it plays fantastically well with tremendous depth and only a couple of faint clicks. This 'foot stomper' really does play well and any 'background' is kept down to an absolute minimum. The end instrumental is so strong and deep with only 2/3 faint ticks.
The intro on 'Under The Boardwalk' is stunning with no discernible 'background' and from then on plays with a wonderfully deep rich audio. A touch of light static maybe and a handful of light ticks and a couple of clicks but they are not intrusive and overall this track is very impressive. None of the 'original sound' has been lost in the intervening years.
'I Can't Be Satisfied' plays with great clarity from the very first note and to the end the depth of the music and definition of each note is sublime. This is unquestionably one of the 'cleanest' versions of this track that I have heard in a long time and this on a 1A/1A first pressing. I heard only 2/3 light ticks and again there is nothing that intrudes on the quality of the listen.
'Pain In My Heart' has a little more static but there are no clicks or pops and still plays with very clear audio in the main. Just 2/3 crackle sounds towards the end although the fade out plays with great clarity.
'Off The Hook' has only light static on the intro and then plays with fantastic sound to the end. This is not far off Near Mint quality in my opinion but I will grade it as Ex+ due to there being some light static on the fade out also, albeit very minimal. I often think I am too harsh on my gradings!
'Suzie-Q' begins superbly with a mega 'clean' intro and then plays with excellent depth and power although there is a little distortion as you would expect. However, there are no clicks or pops and it ends the album with suitably impressive audio.
In summary this rare LP plays with exceptionally clear audio for the majority and there are definitely many sections that are Near Mint although I have not graded it as such. The odd click and tick but they are few and for a genuine first pressing there is very little intrusive interference. Of course it is the famous 'Paste Over' cover that increases the rarity of this 1A/1A pressing and makes it that much more collectable. As detailed below I am glad to say it is in lovely condition with only very minor wear.
The 'Paste Over' Cover
The laminated 'Clarifoil' with the 'Paste Over' on the back is the cleanest example of this famous cover that I have seen in many a year. As stated you can just about see the text of the original cover if you look closely. The edges are in superb condition with only very minor rubbing on the bottom edge. The thin spine is in great order and remarkably is still 100% legible and has no marking at all and the corners have only a little rubbing/creasing. The opening edge is super clean with next to no handling wear. The laminated front cover has some light creasing which is predominantly on the right side and lower right corner but there are no laminate splits or lifting to be seen. The 'Paste Over' sheet on the back is extremely clean and not heavily marked like so many. A little fading around the edges maybe but there is nothing that stands out. A fine example overall.
A History of the 'Paste Over' Cover
Decca already had a lot of original covers in stock when they decision to change the 'blind man' text was taken. So instead of destroying them all they had printed a single paper sheet with the new censored text version and had it glued on top of the original back cover.
The original text on the back cover is just about visible under the 'Paste Over' if you look closely. Two of these 'Paste Over' sheets were printed, one with 'Printed in England' in the lower left corner and one without, this one is the latter. What makes this first 1A/1A pressing very rare is that the 'Paste Over' sheet was only delivered to record stores in very small quantities in 1965. It is in wonderful condition and there certainly cannot be many around like this today!
Interestingly not all the 'Paste Over' sheets were used in 1965. They stopped sending them out in '65 as soon as the new covers were printed without the 'blind man' text but for some reason Decca used the remaining stock in 1968/9. But like I say very few were used on the original 1A/1A first pressings hence the rarity.
The original inner sleeve is in excellent condition with no splits or tears just some light creasing and age related fading around the edges. It has the British Patent number and Foreign patents pending printed on the text side.
The labels
The grooved unboxed labels are in wonderful condition and have no writing/marking on them and not that much spindle wear it deserves to be said. The KT tax code is stamped on both run out grooves.
