DESCRIPTION FROM CRUCIAL BLAST:
Along with Masters Hammer, Root are legends of avant-garde black metal, part of the unique black metal scene that formed in Czechoslovakia in the latter half of the 1980s. Cut off from the rest of the European metal underground by the Iron Curtain, these bands evolved into their own weird species of blackened metal that was obviously influenced by the likes of Bathory and Venom, but with the addition of weird effects, bizarre vocal performances and a strange occult atmosphere that was all their own. Later in their career, Root would also begin to draw from opera, folk music and even classical, but in the early 90's, the band was as black and primitive as they came.
The story behind The Revelation is a strange one. When Root was in the process of recording their second album Hell Symphony in 1991, the band decided to start delivering their lyrics in English in order to appeal to a wider audience outside of Czechoslovakia. While doing this, they also chose to re-record their debut album Zjeveni with English vocals, as the original release had been sung entirely in Czech. This new recording, titled The Revelation, also featured new atmospheric intros that were exclusive to this version. For some reason, the band decided to not release this new English language version of their debut, but at some point it came out as an apparently unauthorized release from the label Sheer Records. Unhappy with the quality of the release and the manner in which it came out, Root distanced themselves from The Revelation, but have since allowed it to be reissued on vinyl by Nuclear War Now with the band's blessing. This new limited edition vinyl release is a stunning collectors item that presents the primitive black thrash of these Czech weirdoes in a gorgeous metallic foil package that had my eyes bugging out of my head.
There are nods to the aforementioned Venom as well as Celtic Frost on The Revelation, mixed with a strange combination of the absurd and the occult and that inherent avant garde weirdness of early Czech black metal. This primitive BM is characterized by the quirky voice of front man Big Boss, whose crooning, wailing vocals are often subjected to weird reverb effects that sound like he's singing from the bottom of an oil drum. The band also uses murky synthesizers here, adding to the eldritch psychedelic vibe. The album starts with a melodramatic spoken word intro ("Enochian Key") that leads into the title track, a lurching mid-tempo black metal jam, raw but seriously heavy and rocking, with moaning, partially whispered vocals. It slips into pounding double-kick thunder with strange cackling vocals swooping overhead. The next song opens with creepy spacey synths and distant percussion, then heads into a really weird black dirge that has heavily processed flanged vocals and electronic effects hanging over slow blackened doom. Then it's on to the super short "Torture", pounding blast beats within a fog of cavernous ancient BM encircled with strange breaking/creaking noises, followed by the orchestral kettledrums of "Burn Death" that serve as a foundation for Big Boss's recitation of another Satanic spoken word piece. After that, the band kicks in with another slower metal dirge that also has spoken vocals over it, later shifting into another chaotic black blast. This theatrical style carries over into "Song For Satan" with more spoken word and dolorous Teutonic keyboards giving way to an awesome Venomesque black riff with gurgling, processed vocals. More deep-space synthesizers open "666", deep floating slabs of cosmic blackness shifting and turning through the void, and shades of synthetic angelic choirs humming in the vastness of black space, far off metal ringing and clanking, blurs of backwards sound, joined eventually with strange chanting, then finally transforming into ripping atavistic blackthrash that goes into a bizarre breakdown of operatic wailing and rolling snare drum at the end. "Cementary" is crude droning thrash that descends into black doom, and "Seven Black Horsemen" starts with a brief bit of fragile folk, then goes into galloping black metal.
A classic piece of Czech black metal history, highly recommended for any fans of primitive off-kilter black metal and the inherently weird Czech BM scene (Master's Hammer, Törr, etc).
The gorgeous packaging for this new edition of The Revelation consists of a striking gatefold jacket printed onto reflective metallic silver stock, with a large foldout poster and a large twenty-page booklet that has photos from Root's 1989-1990 period and great liner notes that detail the strange history behind this album. © CRUCIAL BLAST
