Description

Roses & Revolutions
(U.S.A. D.S.T. Telecommunications, Inc. SSB5693, stereo) 1975

EX / EX / VG+   (rec/rec/cvr)
Both discs are clean & glossy with no notable scuffs, scratches or marks. All four labels are clean and free of writing, tears and spindle marks. I did not listen to the all of it, but I did listen to excerpts of all four sides and heard very little or no crackles, pops or background noise.
Overall, the gatefold sleeve is in beautiful shape. Top & bottom corners of spine are dented, and there is some wear to the top & bottom seams. The bottom corners at both sleeve openings are foxed and worn ~3/4" but they are not quite split. There's a tiny dent on the center right front cover & fairly light ring wear.

Delta Sigma Theta is a nonprofit sorority "dedicated to the literary and artistic advancement of Black people and Black women in particular." It can count among its members, past and present, a number of the finest poets, singers, actors and artists of the 20th Century (the sorority is celebrating its 100th anneversary this year). This double-LP was released in 1975 to document "The Black Experience in America." It consists of song, poetry and prose.

The artists performing on this record include:

Leontyne Price;       Ellen Holly;        Barbara Ann Teer;        Osceola Adams;
Roscoe Lee Browne;        Ruby Dee;        Aretha Franklin;        Novella Nelson;
Leslie Uggams;      Lena Horne;      Roberta Flack;      Nancy Wilson.

The material performed ranges from the poetry of Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker, Georgia Douglass Johnson, Gwendolyn Bennet, Maya Angelou and others; prose works by John Henrik Clarke, Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Margaret Walker, Countee Cullen, Sojourner Truth, Lance Jeffers and many others, as well as songs, both traditional and contemporary; religious and secular. There is quite an impressive array spread across these four sides, and while some of the performances are taken from previously released recordings (Lena Horne and Gabor Szabo, Roberta Flack/First Take, Aretha Live at Fillmore West, etc) I believe (to the best of my knowledge) that many of the spoken word pieces contained herein are unique to this, privately pressed set. As it is, Roses & Revolutions represents a massive, unparallelled document of artistic achievement in the service of social change and spiritual empowerment.

Records are strictly, visually graded:

NM:
 disc appears unplayed; sleeve shows no signs of handling
EX:
disc has no flaws; sleeve has only very minor, not obvious flaws
NEX:
disc has very minor, inaudible flaws; sleeve still looks quite nice
VG+:
disc normally will not have audible marks, but more visual flaws; sleeve will have more noticeable, minor wear
VG:
disc will have slight audible flaws; sleeve clearly shows wear

Standard LP shipping rates apply; I do NOT charge a handling fee; I try to charge actual postage costs and I will, as I've done in the past, refund any postage fees paid above cost.
