Brief Info: The superb debut album from Roxy Music. This brilliantly blended progressive rock with glam and was well-received on issue. Selling quite well and charting at 10 in the UK. Fronted by the charismatic vocalist Bryan Ferry, they could hardly fail. Their first two albums featured Eno who gave their early sound a real edge and originality. Their albums always superbly packaged with glamous covers, this one no exceptional and in lovely fresh condition. A bit of a rarity for Island Records, this gatefold was fully laminated. This copy appears hardly used and plays clean and impressively, not all do I have found out over time, the album’s final song especially often has major pressing noises and pressing problems. So a very fine example to please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a fully laminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor Group Ltd, includes the Island blue inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front, Back & Inside: All surfaces retain excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting, creasing or dulling. The inside hinge laminate uncracked or broken, all the graphics are immaculate and this is one of the very best examples I have seen for some time. Cover protection from new means it has hardly been handled and beautifully preserved. The front cover model is Kari-Ann Muller, the first of the ‘Roxy’ girls – their covers famously featuring other glamour models on future albums – she later married Chris Jagger, brother of Mick, she will rarely be seen looking better than this on this famous debut album sleeve.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four straight, flat and parallel, the laminate very smooth with no scuffs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back opening edges are mostly sharp with very little thickening. The front has a tucked and folded edge which is unworn.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, without the usual recess this often forms which sinks the text. Also the magenta text all unworn or faded and fully present. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together. All laminate smooth and intact with just a tiny lift on the very bottom end.

Corners: All corners immaculate and very sharp with no dinks.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this classic 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This highly attractive, fresh item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: with some creasing to one top corner. This one retains fine colour – these are somewhat prone to fading – the polylining intact with all edges the same with no repairs. This has the correct ‘basing street’ address, this and the logo still strong.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Roxy Music being far more progressive in their early days with the influence of Brian Eno. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. The production a little muted being critical, that a documented fact, but the superb music is still very impressive. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues*. An album with some quiet passages but little to fault even on these. Pressing quality can, and often is an issue with this album, but nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been superbly stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
