Brief Info: A brilliant second album with an equally stunning cover, for me one of the greatest of this decade. This was far more ‘progressive’ than glam-rock and less commercial as the later titles. This was Roxy Music with Eno and his treatments of the conventional instruments gave them a very interesting sound which was developed still further on this album. For Your Pleasure is my personal favourite Roxy Music album. Sadly Eno left the band for a solo career after this title and their sound became more conventional but still superb up to Siren. Their first and second records were more experimental and it works to perfection. Two superb tracks stand out: the huge rocking opener, ‘Do the Strand’ with its wailing saxophone riffs and ‘In Every Dream Home a Heartache’ where Ferry sings about his mail-order lover, an inflatable doll that totally blows his mind. You can hardly imagine this iconic vocalist singing about such subjects on the later albums. Island got the packaging right as well and even fully laminated this classic cover, not something they did often. Also the record is very cleanly pressed by EMI, it made the play-grade a real pleasure. For those who only know the post-Siren Roxy Music, the early albums are little different, far more ‘progressive’ and hugely exciting, sophisticated and brilliant.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better, a fully laminated gatefold format, printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the plain white inner sleeve with the correct Patent Nos 112555 as used by EMI pressings.

Lamination – Front & Back: A classic 1970s cover, and this one does it very strong justice. This retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity, mild rim dulling on the back mostly seen under light, this rarely avoided on such revealing surfaces. The lack of lifting is a huge plus on a cover like this, the same for creasing which has hardly any, those present ultra small, fine and faint near the edges. A couple of mild press lines seen under light again, but little detracts from magnificent artwork, one of my personal favourite covers ever. It remains incredibly black and fresh and seldom seen much better these days.

Cover Inside: Again superb artwork and here seen looking practically new. There is nothing to fault and even the laminate on the fold hinge is totally uncracked and solid.

Top & Bottom Edges: All smooth, straight and flush without wear or chips, they look virtually as-made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge with nothing to fault and immaculate. The back entrance edges are clean and sharp with any traces of thickening minuscule. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the back one slightly less wide than the outer one in manufacture to reiterate the fact.

Spine and Text: Fantastic again, solid, straight, hardly compressed and folded square, so the edges meet up neatly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the uncracked or peeled laminate – an ultra fine central surface crease will always form on these, here as light as they get. So the text has not sunken which usually happens when the cover is opened a number of times.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light with better than excellent shape retained with just a tiny tip crease on the back top right.

Cover Summary: A lovely, beautifully dark, intense black example of this classic 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This highly attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): many Island records pressed by EMI included the plain white inner sleeves with their 1125555 patent number. These were unlined and this one in very fine condition with any darkening of the paper light near the edges. Minimal creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed on high quality EMI vinyl. Any surface traces very few, fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches and in average room light, barely anything even registers. This glam-prog classic should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. An album with some very quiet passages, but even these are impressive as well. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
