Before he became a towering testament to grandiose heartbreak at the Nashville-based Monument label, Orbison was in danger of being dismissed as a rock’n’roll nearly nan across state in Memphis at Sam Phillips’ Sun studios. Originally released in 1961 to capitalise on his new label fame, this album’s 12 tracks are now boosted by another 25 cuts; ie, his entire output under Phillips.
It wasn’t intended as a best of in its first incarnation, more a broad representation of what The Big O was about. Rockers such as Ooby Dooby and Mean Little Mama sit alongside country balladry the likes of Trying To Get To You (earlier recorded by that other Sun stalwart, Elvis), and it’s the uptempo numbers that offer a clue to the problems Phillips had with Roy – he just couldn’t cut loose in the feral fashion of Jerry Lee Lewis or Carl Perkins.
Presley guitarist Scotty Moore overdubbed guitar parts for the album once Orbison had left the fold, and the embryonic original recordings feature at the end here. There’s also space for rarely heard demos, plus the songs which, ultimately, underperformed as singles. Orbison’s tenure at Sun may have been regarded as a case of wrong-place-wrong-time, but there’s still much to recommend.
Most of the songs on Roy Orbison at the Rock House were written by Roy Orbison but the songwriting credits were assigned to Sam Phillips, and are in the traditional rockabilly style the Sun label was known for. Notable exceptions are compositions by other Sun artists Harold Jenkins (better known as "Conway Twitty") and Johnny Cash. "Rock House" was written by Roy Orbison with Conway Twitty.
