When Rush returned their elbows to the drafting board in 2001, the result was uncertain. Vapor Trails first released in 2002, and came after a five-year gap and a near-ending of the group after drummer and lyricist Neil Peart lost both his daughter and wife in quick succession. Peart withdrew entirely, travelling alone across North America and later capturing the experience in his writing. It marks the band's reassembly after that rupture, written slowly and deliberately in Toronto once Peart agreed to continue. It sits late in their catalogue but functions as a reset: no keyboards for the first time since the mid-70s, songs built directly from early jams, lyrics shaped by grief, survival and re-entry into ordinary life. Issued on Anthem, it reopened Rush's studio career and led directly into their longest and largest touring period.
